Default Need help with my car( blown gasket)

So my car has been throwing clear white smoke. So i took it to the shop and the guy said its a blown gasket and ill have to pay around $2,000 to fix it.

Its a 2006 Toyota Scion TC with 180,000 miles on it. I'm the 3rd owner.

Is it worth fixing or should I get a new car?

If you blew your gasket chances are you never maintained other aspects of your car. Repairs come in bunches. Take the $2000 and down pay a newer model.

180K?

Get a newer one.

You can keep a car as a backup with those miles just fine but fixing the engine at that point? Maybe on a work truck that pay for itself. Regular car?

Nah.

have you looked into replacing it urself? the headgasket itself is $40, i think if you do it yourself with the guidance of youtube videos, you should be aboe to do it for less than $1k

Yea most of the cost of a head gasket repair is the insane number of hours they can charge you in labor.

If there are no other problems with it, it's definitely worth fixing. It's probably worth at least $4000. And a salvage yard might give you $500 for it. So to basically junk it, you will lose $1500. Hopefully that $2k includes head resurfacing if you need it. No one here knows your car like you do, so it's hard to say whether to keep it or not. Buying another used car is always risky, but less so if you get it from a friend or family.

Did the water pump recently give out or has it had other problems(other than brakes, tires, starter, alternator, etc)since you bought it? If it's been relatively problem free, I'd lean toward keeping it and fixing it unless you have the money to get something newer and nicer.

Sell it, unless you can do it yourself. It's fairly straightforward if you are handy but hella time consuming

lol 12 hours to pull the intake and valve covers off and remove the heads to replace the gaskets....no way in hell. Find local guy that does car repairs on the side and get it done for $400 and a case of beer. And get the damn timing belt/chain replaced along with tensioner and water pump while you are at before they go and you break more shit. Register an account here, tell them your situation, tell them what maintenance you have done, and they will tell you what you should do and if it's worth keeping.

Get more estimates than that one mechanic before you decide what you want to do with it.

I wanted to get control arms and tie rods done, some mechanics vary by the hundreds of dollars.

Find a lazy mechanic, not an honest one. Lazy mechanic won't do more work than he has to and will get it done asap.

But really, do it yourself or use that $2k towards a new vehicle,
