He's just in a bad slump and really needs to have a breakout game. As far as losing confidence is concerned, it's actually the oppostie. JR's confidence should be much higher since he know he's gonna get more minutes.
Probably because all he does is shoot. There's a reason why Jones is starting over him. If he wants more minutes than he needs to show that he can do more than just shoot the ball every game. It also doesn't help that he is currently struggling with his shot. I do think that Karl's decision to start a guy like Jones, who signed with the team just this year, over a guy like J.R. who's been with the team alot longer, signed a new contract and showed alot of promise last year(particularly in the 2nd half of the season and in the playoffs) has something to do with it. Add in the fact that one of the motives to move Iverson was to get him more playing time and possible start games and yet neither has happened(with the exception of playing time, but even that's going down). It's got to be playing with his mind a little. But, it's alot easier to just call Karl a hater. 85 games played-0 games started and that's counting last years playoffs, while not counting the 06/07 season.
BTW, I don't know what Karl see's in Jones. I've watched him play and it's not all that impressive or special to justify the start. I'd rather have AC or even Balkman start at the 2.
