OP is right, but all the internet did is allow the best and worst of our nature to come to the forefront. Man is inherently flawed - prideful, attention seeking, and insecure. We are also immensely powerful.

Civilization rests on the foundation that there is more good than bad in us. Certain times in our history have challenged this - e.g., WWII. Luckily for us, our challenge of this generational is less traumatic. We don't have to fight wars, but we do have to fight the growing reality that people are out for themselves without regard for the society they live in (thanks to being able to alienate themselves through virtual networks).

It is astounding to me that people in this day and age still combat the moralistic minimum that equal access to food, water, healthcare, education, and housing are privileges instead of rights. How we as a society can revel in the narcissism of a Bieber, but not stand up uniformly for a healthcare that covers ever person is beyond me. There is no longer a middle class and we blame the symptoms (police brutality) instead of the cause (lack of access to the bare minimum of resources).

I agree with the OP that 'attention' is the root of all evil in today's society. Trolling is bad but it is done for fun while attention is truly bad. Here is why, social media has turned everyone into an attention seeking whore. One of mankind's flaws are competition and attention. In life we are competing to move up in our careers. To stand out from others.

Therefore, fast forward to 2015 with social media, it made it even worse. All I see now are women seeking attention by posting selfies on their social media so thirsty ass guys can comment, "beautiful". It is a false sense of security.

If we go back in time before social media, it would deem offensive to walk up to someone's girl and tell them they are beautiful and your girlfriend isn't going to be giving a selfie-duck-kiss face look at a stranger would they? Nope. Social media has allowed them to do this.

My buddy is like a Facebook pimp. He reaches out to all the women he ever knew in his life and preys on them. Instead of talking to a girl, he is social media pimping and messaging.

Don't let your girls be attention whores. Everyone wants to be known or famous and social media has allowed people to. I've seen relationships busted because of these sites.
