first off, it sounds like a minor league team's name. then the team is named after a slow, funky bird with a big nut sack hanging off of it's throat.

It has nothing common with new city.They named Hornets because it had special meaning for city of Charlotte.

Originally to be named the Charlotte Spirit, the team was renamed the Charlotte Hornets after the objection of the local fans. During the revolutionary war, Brtitsh General Cornwallis remarked about the resistance met in North Carolina "There's a rebel behind every bush, it's a veritable nest of hornets.

I thought the Sleeptrain Arena in Sacramento was bad (and it is), but when your owners are the Maloofs, you anticipate badness. The Pelicans is worse.
