Default Does Yao Ming have the gigantism disease?

Quote:
Now that Yao is out again, all of the experts who hedged in their predictions about Houston's chances to win a title because of injuries have been right on the mark. Is there something about Yao's freakish size that bring all of his injuries upon him, or is it just bad luck? The osteomyelitis he suffered was certainly due to a side effect of giantism. But breaking his patella? Breaking his leg? These physical problems Yao is having seems like the thumbs down from some divine source. Your opinion, please? Rick, Houston

Since my degrees only deal with dunks, drop steps, double teams, and double screens, I certainly am unqualified to make a medical diagnosis. But my friend and fellow hoop-o-maniac, Dr. Tom Winters, is an orthopedic specialist at New England Baptist Hospital, and he agrees that Yao is officially a "giant".

One of the many problems connected with giantism (which is a disease of the pituitary gland that affects growth hormones) is the deleterious effects on soft tissue. With weakened and stretched ligaments and tendons, the extra long bones of such as Yao simply fail to get the structural support they require. Fragile bones, joint deformities, and bone infections are inevitable. As are eventual vascular difficulties.

Unfortunately, Yao's physical problems will only get worse, especially since his body is being subjected to the incredible stresses of playing professional basketball. That's why Dr. Tom believes that Yao's NBA career will ultimately be short-lived.

Yao Ming is genetically tall. He does not have pituitary gigantism or acromegaly, a condition afflicting his fellow countryman and basketball hopeful Sun Ming Ming.

hmm, i guess we have a mystery on our hands.

actually there's a little fishiness here. for starters, could a doctor really know for sure that yao had gigantism without examing him and looking at his blood work? secondly, did the doctor say "giantism", perhaps simply meaning that yao is a giant and rosen mistakenly thought he meant "gigantism" which is a specific disorder?

lastly, the WP article saying he doesn't have gigantism includes no source, meaning it could simply be a fan's opinion (anyone is free to edit WP entries). OTOH if it's true that yao's father was 6'10" and his mother 6'2", yao's size is not necessarily surprising. and yet again, if it's true he grew another inch after entering the NBA at a relatively advanced age then that is indeed a sign of gigantism as i understand it.

okay, it seems like more of a mystery than ever now.

this is a post i copied over from the NJN subforums. we were wondering about this and i figured someone here might have access to better information.

thanks,
gigantes

I hate Charley Rosen, he's probably hates the Rockets more than any writer EVER. He does'nt even have his facts straight its not giantism its gigantism. His father is 6'10 and mom is 6'2, its all genetics.

If this case was true, we would probably have known this a while back. He's 26 years old and has been through many doctors. None of them have considered him with gigantism. I think Rosen just interviewed many doctors just so he could get a quote he wanted, and the doctor has not examined Yao either, you just cant label someone with gigantism without examing them.

But,what the hell do I know?

it's not that i disagree with you... i think we're mostly thinking alike.

i know rosen is a cranky old man who isn't happy unless he's saying something negative about them, OTOH he's usually very good with his sources and details so that's the part that scares me a little.

i'd rather this not be true because what yao has accomplished is awesome and i sure hope his body doesn't break down before his time. it's so great to see a big man who can play inside and pass it back out to make the outside game work. i'm 100% interested in seeing the team built around him, not mcgrady.

Despite what Yao said about Reebok, I think his shoes were causing problems. He was just taking the high road by not calling them out which is the type of person he is. Last year when he got injured at the end of the season was just a fluke. His new injury and last years injury could have happened to anyone.

I don't think Yao's got gigantism. . .since he came to the NBA a few years ago he hasn't gotten any taller has he? I just think he's had a string of bad luck with the injuries. . .

Hey, if you like Sun Ming Ming, vote for his show Anatomy of a Giant at the Discovery Channel poll here. If the show gets enough votes, they'll run it again on Saturday, and maybe they'll be encouraged to do more shows about athletes instead of some of the other lame stuff they do.

People with gigantism have a distinct facial structure. yao does not have it so my guess is that he doesn't have and is fortunate to have good genes.
