I am quite fond of national anthems as a musical genre and I have explored it a bit in the past.

There are a few of them who were composed by actually relevant classical composers... The USSR, undeniably beautiful, is not one of them (Aleksandr Aleksandrov was Glazunov's pupil but he's only known for this piece).
Much more notable examples are the Austrian one (on Mozart's music) and German one (Haydn).

To my longlasting displease, instead, whilst Italy has an extraordinary tradition in classical musical, especially at the time when it became unite, our own anthem is nothing but a trivial march.
It is quite close in my mind to the SouthAmerican group. While musically quite banal their lyrics are by far the most fervent of all, and the result is very effective especially during football games
The Uruguayans sing "Orientales, la patria o la tumba!" (your nation, or the grave)
The Chileans sing "O la tumba seras de los libres, o el asilo contra la opresion" (you will be either the grave of the free, or the shelter from oppression).
(These two are among my favourites).

On the other end of the spectrum, Eastern European are slow, solemn, touching.
The Hungarian one in particular. It brings tears. Wonderful.


Some curiousities:
- The Spanish one is one of the very few in the western world without official lyrics.
- The music of the anthem of Israel (one of my favourites) is based on an old Italian medieval tune which also inspired Bedrich Smetana in the composition of the very famous "Vltava" piece of his symphonic poem "Ma Vlast" (one of the cornerston of late romanticism).
- The music of the US anthem (which I actually like a lot) is an old English tune ("Anacreon in Heaven").
- The Dutch anthem is very, very old, so much that its lyrics read "To the king of Spain I've granted a lifelong loyalty" That was quite peculiar, during last WC's final.

... I had forgot the funniest. The music of the French anthem was written by an Italian
