Default The NBA Draft Auction

Screw the Lottery. Here is a draftsystem, that limits tanking to a minimum, allows the worst team to get the best draft position and ensures the tension of the lottery.

The NBA Draft Auction:

First,the NBA has to introduce a new currency.Let`s call it a Starbuck(SB) ...:)

The team which ends up with the worst record in the league gets 6000 SB`s.
The second-worst team gets 5800,than 5600 and so on...

It ends with the team that has the best record of all Not-Playoff-qualified teams,No. 17.This team gets 3400 Starbucks...(14 Teams as in the current lottery)...

Each one of the 14 teams gets a spot in the new NBA Draft Auction, where they have to bid their SB`s anonymous for a draft position of their own choice.

The team that bids the most SBīs for a draft position wins the spot of their choice.A team, which loses in the auction, also loses their offered SB`s.

One spot in the auction, one right to bid points to a specific draft position.
Of course, noone will bid for No. 12,13,or 14 in the draft,so remaining draft postions are given to the loosers of the auction in reverse order to their regular season record.

Teams can keep their SBīs in one year,so they have more in another year.
If a team ends up with the worst or the eleventhworst record doesn`t matter, each one has the same shot at getting the No.1 Pick. The worse team just gets more Starbucks in this year...too risky for tanking.

Playoff qualified teams also get Starbucks, but much less, and they do not participate in the auction. They can keep their SB`s for hard times.

Worst record:6000 SB`s
2ndworst:5800 SB`s
3rdworst:5600 SB`s
....
14th:3400 SB`s

15th:2000 SB`s (Playoffs ! )
16th:1900 SB`s
....
Best record: 500 SB`s

Starbucks could also be used in Trades.Bad teams can trade their right to enter the auction, and they can trade their SB`s,too. That would increase their value dramatically....sounds like a competition,hm?

-------------------------------------------------------------------
What do you think about it?Can it help the NBA to get a better draft system?Where are the weak spots? Critize it...come on,I know you want to.
And if you know a better system, please let me know about it...

Not a horrible concept but it wouldnt work. Lets say that a playerwants to start out with a ring. They could take Phoenix's 5 starbucks over Memphis' 2000. It doesn't sound very likely, but it could definitly happen, especially with Europpean players.

One Spot in the auction, one right to bid SB`s for a specific draft position. The player decides nothing...

Playoff qualified teams (...) do not participate in the auction.

In this years draft,Phoenix would have a spot in the auction. But would they have enough Starbucks for Draft Position No.1?never...(until they trade for SBīs)
So Phoenix would never bid for No.1.
Maybe No.5,but what if Chicago wants the No.5 spot too?

I think the idea of hoarding them over time is interesting, not sure it'd work though. It is good that say a team doesn't like the prospects it can get, they could just hold to them for next year so they can get someone they like. But once you see a guy in HS that everyone loves and is gonna be the next Oden, you can just stop drafting and save up so you get that guy no matter what...which wouldn't be horrible, they'd have to sacrifice a lot for him...
