He hit Kessler as the ball was being released and probably would have gotten to him before if it weren't a light contact intrasquad scrimmage. I'm pretty sure most linemen do not want their QBs to end up on the turf, screen pass or not. He was right on top of him.

Myles Garrett continues to progress, records two sacks in Browns scrimmage
Pat McManamon
ESPN Staff Writer

CLEVELAND -- Myles Garrett was plenty noticeable in the Cleveland Browns' intrasquad scrimmage Friday night.

Garrett played both left and right defensive end and was officially credited with two sacks. Browns coach Hue Jackson told him it could have been four as officials hired to work the scrimmage gave quarterbacks a little leeway.

"I am going with whatever they call," Garrett said. "Coach said I had four. They blew [the whistle on] two so I am just going to go with two.

Garrett did not face Joe Thomas because the first-team defense went against the backups Friday. That let Garrett out-muscle and out-quick more than one backup tackle. Two of the sacks came against rookie Roderick Johnson, with one on which he blew past and under Johnson.

On the next play, Garrett would have unloaded on the quarterback in a full-speed game, but he pulled off and Kevin Hogan completed a 35-yard pass. At normal speed, the play would have been a strip-sack and the ball easily could have been going the other way.

It was another good step in a series of recent good ones for the draft's first overall pick. Garrett, who suffered a foot injury during minicamp, got his first reps with the starters this week, and in every practice made one or two eye-opening plays.

"I am just getting my rhythm back, starting to feel good again," Garrett said. "It is not like I was feeling unhealthy. It was just getting back into the pace of things. Just seeing what I can do. "Testing some moves out and seeing how they work, testing my opponent and seeing what I can get away with and how I can be successful.

I have little doubt he will be a 8-12 sack guy in the league, it's the other 600 snaps that worry me.

There's no reason he can't be a HOF'er. If anyone can get it out of him it's their DC, one of the top 5 in the business IMO.

Garrett hurt his ankle today. The Browns fear the injury may be "serious" and that he "could miss four or more weeks." He was seen leaving the Browns' practice facility in a walking boot and on crutches. An MRI is scheduled for tomorrow.

Sounds bad.

Browns are so unlucky...you guys just can't have nice things.

I almost feel like people are treating this injury as "well that's the Browns for you, moving on"

We'll see. I'm not getting too pessimistic about it quite yet. He is set to be re-evaluated after next week. And, the defense still held the Steelers to 14 points in the opener and looked really solid even without Myles.

Kizer looked pretty damn good. The Browns are the youngest team in the NFL and they battled what is supposed to be a Super Bowl contender even after a disastrous punt block touchdown on the first series of downs.

I still feel good about Myles and where this team is at, currently.

If this was any other team I wouldn't be that concerned, but this is the Browns we are talking about. Our 1st round draft pick luck has been terrible.

Love Peppers and Deshone though. If Deshone pans out the Browns will FINALLY be on an upward path regardless if Garrett can't consistently stay on the field.

Corey Coleman out with a broken hand for the second season in a row.

Yeah, I just posted this in the Week 2 game thread. This franchise cannot catch a break ... no pun intended.

Coleman didn't need surgery last year and that is why he "only" missed 6 weeks. It could be worse this time.

It's going to be hilarious when the Browns get the 1st overall pick and they pass on Darnold because they have Kizer.

I thought he looked really good all preseason and in the first game versus Pittsburgh. Baltimore gave him some problems, though. He missed a couple tackles, coverage assignments, and even looked unusually uncomfortable on returns.

Oh well... growing pains and Baltimore is one of the toughest teams to play on the road. I still look at him as a tremendous talent going forward.

Myles Garrett was back at practice today.

Myles Garrett returns to Cleveland Browns practice

No. 1 overall pick Myles Garrett returned to the practice field Thursday for the first time since suffering a high-ankle sprain on Sept. 6.

Coach Hue Jackson foreshadowed Garrett's potential return to practice earlier this week.

"He's close," Jackson said Wednesday, via Scott Petrak. "I think there's a chance he'll practice this week before the week's out, so we'll see where we are after that."

Whether Garrett makes his NFL debut this Sunday versus the Cincinnati Bengals remains to be seen. If he does play, it will likely be on a snap count.

Jackson told reporters Garrett looked like himself at practice Thursday.

"Good to have him out there," he said, per The Plain Dealer. "Want to talk to medical staff, want to be cautious but smart."
