I am not sure why you think the Blazers almost ruined his career. As a rookie he played in 77 games averaged 7.6 points shooting 48.5% in 12.6 minutes. Very respectable for a rookie. His second year he only played in 18 games before being traded. Remember he was playing behind Drexler, a Hall of Fame player.
Notice in the stats below, he really didn't bloom until the 91-92 season, 1.5 seasons after his trade from Portland.
