I always like it when "unusual" instruments or vocal styles are introduced into a song. I'm not sure how "cultural" it is...

For instance the banjo solo here (Norway) or here (Finland). Or the accordion used in this song (Norway) warning: this song gets loud after about 10 seconds. I fackin' love the didgeridoo (?) used in this song (Netherlands).

Probably my favorite is stuff that's been infused with folk music in some way. Like this (Italy), this (Norway), this (America) I saw them do this live and it blew my mind apart.. like Irish meets New York hip hop. I really dig this Russian neoclassical band that writes songs inspired by JRR Tolkien's writings.

I'm not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for. I enjoy all styles of music, and I enjoy it when each culture puts their spin on different styles.

I just remembered a pretty cool band from Israel called Orphaned Land. They describe themselves as "Jewish-Muslim metal."

I dig these two songs by them, especially the first with the female vocalist. I think the second one is an old Jewish song.

You can definitely hear the cultural influence. They're also pretty impressive in the fact that they are from Israel and have a very strong following amongst Christian, Jewish, Muslim, and atheists/anything else.

Also, you should check out some Eurovision songs. It's a music competition in Europe, sort of like American Idol or something except each musical act is from a different country.

Here's a review of some of the past winners http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geZZ32svm9k

I have the 2010 winner on my iPhone. Song is catchy as fk.

At one point, I really liked this band called Sektor Gaza from Russia. Here's a song, that as far as I can tell, is about a guy and his motorcycle. Has a cool old rock sound to it. Almost kind of reminds me of Joan Jett or something, heh.

for whatever reason that music still thrills me and haunts me when i listen to it. chills up my spine and a feeling of needing to go back to nature and the tall mountains, immediately.

    genetic impressions, maybe?

For those with long attention spans

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=en4PBZ1Wzno - Ravi Shankar s

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpREmUglo3M - A mridangam (south Indian version of a Tabla) solo - very complex rhythmic patterns. Far more complex than anything you generally hear in Western music.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tod7pMD7BoQ Mridangam vs. Tabla duel. Fcuking sick. If you are into percussion this one is highly recommended.
