Iguodala to work out with U.S. team

Andre Iguodala has caught the attention of USA Basketball.

The 76ers star forward/guard accepted an invitation to practice and scrimmage with the U.S. national team as it prepares for the FIBA Americas Championships, the Olympic qualifying tournament scheduled from Aug. 22 to Sept. 2 in Las Vegas.

Jerry Colangelo, the national team's chief executive officer, confirmed Iguodala's acceptance to the Daily News by e-mail and telephone.

Iguodala, who led the Sixers with a scoring average of 18.2 points in 76 games, is in a group of eight to 10 young players who will join the national team for its pretournament camp Aug. 15 to 21 in Las Vegas.

That group includes Al Jefferson, of the Boston Celtics, and Brandon Roy, of the Portland Trail Blazers. Former Villanova star Randy Foye, now with the Minnesota Timberwolves, has been on a list of potential invitees, but reportedly has had some problems with tendinitis after playing for the Wolves' summer-league team.

"The idea is to put players in the pipeline as it relates to USA Basketball, looking ahead to the [2012] Olympics," Colangelo said. "People feel that Andre is a very talented young player who has an awful lot of upside, and that he blossomed."

Iguodala became the focal point of the Sixers after their December trade sent Allen Iverson to the Denver Nuggets. He averaged 5.7 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 2.0 steals, shooting 82 percent from the foul line in his third season. He was the first Sixer to start all 82 games in his first two seasons since Clarence Weatherspoon in 1992-93 and '93-94.

The U.S. will open its Group B preliminary competition Aug. 22 against Venezuela. Two of the 10 competing teams will qualify for next summer's Olympics in Beijing. The teams finishing third, fourth and fifth will qualify for next July's World Olympic tournament, which will determine the final three teams to qualify for the Olympics.

I like this move! I think its time for Andre to establish himself as a major player in this league and this only helps.

I think this would help him prepare for the season, and this will also let everyone else see his great defensive ability and just maybe he could be play for the 2012 team.
