They only recommend 2 but I find that 3 is about right. I don't think that's overdoing it and usually takes care of the problem.
If you have shin splints, you have to strengthen them. If they are strong, then you should get them... they are just kind of awkward to work out. The best way is to get a dumbell and put it on your foot and flex your foot upward bringing them towards your shin. There is a piece of equipment that is meant for it but it's rare in gyms and you'll probably have to buy it... why do that when a dumbell would do the trick.
