Because the Utah Jazz still want him, or at least they are not yet ready to dispose of him. He wasn’t relegated to Europe as much as he was placed there, a draft-and-stash prospect. He’s stayed in regular contact with people in the Jazz front office and, after winning an MVP award and a tournament title in February, he was sent a care package from Jazz General Manager Dennis Lindsay. According to a source with knowledge of the situation, the Jazz brass believed that spending a year overseas would benefit Williams-Goss more than if he had remained stateside as a G League player or on a two-way contract.

Wonder why they thought overseas was better for him? Because of Wallace and Paige?

He could also find further obstacles in a healthy Dante Exum and in Alec Burks if he can somehow maintain his playoff performances from this past season and crack back into the regular rotation. If O’Neale stumbles at all, he could see his minutes swallowed up by either or both of those guys, as well as potentially by Jazz draft selection Grayson Allen.

Burks isn't playing over anyone

Quote:
Allen is good defensively (though likely not as good as Royce) and could possibly be a better deep-ball threat. In other words, there will be no shortage of competition for O’Neale to have to continue to prove himself. In his worst case scenario, he would get buried on the bench behind Utah’s exceptional guard depth.

Than Royce will play the 3. He's a big part of the future

The Jazz now get to roll the same lineups that got them to the second round of the playoffs last season. Don’t think that’s a good thing?

It's a great thing if making it tow the 2nd round of the layoffs is the goal I guess.

Quote:
Ricky Rubio’s production should continue

That 36%/32% from 3 against OKC will continue?

Quote:
Re-signing Favors almost assures the Jazz a top 5 defense, if not the best in the league. On top of that, Utah really found a groove with Favors and Rudy Gobert on the floor at the same time. It also gives the Jazz options to alternate rest while keeping an elite big man on the floor.

Favors is not elite and the defense isn't top 5 because of him.

Quote:
Favors also just makes winning plays. Whether it’s getting all the 50/50 balls, a game winning floater, an offensive putback or a monster block, Derrick Favors makes your team better.

And someone that fits better makes them even better than that

Quote:
There’s so many young talented players on this team that will only get better. Donovan Mitchell, Royce O’neale, Dante Exum and Grayson Allen will not only play big roles but will improve as the season goes along.

The problem is Exum and Allen have to still prove they belong on the floor. It's not summer league anymore

Reminder tweet: for the Jazz to have signed Jabari Parker to the offer sheet he just got, they would have had to have not resigned/waived: Derrick Favors, Dante Exum, Raul Neto, Thabo Sefolosha, Jonas Jerebko, and Ekpe Udoh.

11:56 AM - Jul 14, 2018

Parker replaces Favors at almost the same price. Exum isn't given 33 million he hasn't earned. 4 guys that Snyder doesn't want to play? Losing an of them would be abad thing?

Quote:
The Jazz can now keep their continuity and depth that made them so strong this season. And besides, they’ll have more money available next offseason when more viable free agents are available that play defense.

They would have had the same money next year. Parker has a team option next year. They blew it!!!!!!!!!!!

Quote:
If you don’t stand pat with that when you have a young team then we have basketball disagreements. Houston is weaker this year, Spurs have now lost Kawhi, Lakers didn’t get Kawhi and just have LeBron and a bunch of young guys, Memphis isn’t getting any younger, Portland has hit it’s ceiling, OKC doesn’t scare me at all, We are better than the Nuggets, Pelicans, and the Warriors looked mortal last year and our only getting older and more worn out.

Why has a young team like Portland hit their ceiling but the Jazz can only get better?

Jazz 80/1 to 90/1 – via Twitter ESefko

The real experts aren't too impressed with standing pat

Quote:
Another goal that Rudy should have in order to reach his utmost potential is to get off to a fast start in the upcoming season. For the past two seasons, Gobert’s second half of the year has been significantly more effective than the first. Sure, part of that this past year had to do with his health, but there’s still no denying his trend of relatively slow starts.

He got off to a great start two years ago. He finished better because they put better guys around him. He started slow last year because Rubio and COTY and Hood and Johnson were jokes!

Quote:
Rudy shouldn’t be focused on adding a 3-point shot or any sort of uncharacteristic weapons. Instead he should be focused on building on his offensive strengths such as improving his pick-and-roll play and finishing at the rim. If he gets better in those facets and commands more respect on offense, his impact will expand significantly.

Going to be tough going for him and Mitchell and Ingles because of the lack of spacing

Quote:
With all the summer transactions, the Jazz are now nearly $17 million over the league salary cap — roughly $3.5 million under the luxury tax — and may only sign outside players using any available exceptions or at league minimum salaries, according to spotrac.com. Biannual and mid-level exceptions are available but it’s highly unlikely Lindsey will use those this late in the game.

Depends on if he's done. Still makes sense to trade Burks, Thabo and Udoh.

Quote:
Donovan Mitchell and Tony Bradley also face team options next offseason, while Ricky Rubio, Alec Burks, Sefolosha and Udoh have contracts expiring next summer.

Mitchell and Bradley will be picked up before the season starts. 3 more years of Exum sucking though could be hard to overcome!

However, even if adding Jabari would have been feasible to begin with (which it really wasn’t), he would have come with several red flags. His attitude, injury history and price were all warning signs the Jazz most certainly considered.

Was certainly fesible if the Jazz were looking to win

Quote:
Ultimately, Utah opted to bring back essentially their same group as last year, including Derrick Favors as the starting four, instead of pursuing Parker or a variety of other potentially sexy options. Some fans have been bothered by this, but I’ve maintained that it was the right thing for the team to do.

But you're clueless

When you combine what Favors does on both ends of the floor, you find that he’s in pretty elite company. David Robinson is a Hall of Famer. Anthony Davis is on track to be. Favors has sacrificed the role and shot attempts he might need to be a 20-and-10 guy, but his all-around impact is still huge.

He's never looked like a 10 rebound a game type of guy. Maybe 20 on the right team.
