That argument only works in leagues without a salary cap. When you have a team very likely won't be allowed to go into the luxury tax by it's ownership, the "it's not my money" thing doesn't fly because it gives the Raptors no room to add anyone else to the roster.
And of course the Raptors are looking to do this. They've already outbid themselves on contracts to Bargnani and Derozan by jumping the gun and signing them a year earlier than necessary. Why not do the same thing with Rudy Gay, who has only been slightly above-average the last 2 years or so.
This franchise is a total mess.
