Sparts Arwell has an OK reputation so far
Default How can MLB be profitable with so many early afternoon games?

Never been much of a baseball fan myself so maybe there's an obvious reason I'm missing here? But it seems like during baseball season half the teams are have already started playing by 2:00 in the afternoon! How can they be making enuff money in attendance and tv viewership to pay all those hundred million dollar player contracts?

Any baseball heads out there know what MLB's thinking is behind their scheduling?

I love baseball and I especially love afternoon baseball. In fact there should be even more afternoon baseball. The early schedule of afternoon baseball is done only because of how cold some of the northern cities are in April. Once the summer months arrive, expect to see more night games. Detroit being an example, imagine if the game in Det was still going on right now, that would keep people away so putting the game in the afternoon while the sun is still out should help.

Rich folks who are CEO's of companies and can leave the office in the middle of the afternoon to go to a game fund the attendance. Some of the higher ups with our company always take a friday afternoon and go see a game and discuss "business".

Friday afternoon games are pretty rare though, Wednesday/Thursday is when you would usually find the bulk of afternoon games. AKA getaway games.

btw, there is nothing i enjoy more than watching afternoon
there isn't a better feeling out there, at least for me

Majority of the schedule are late games.

You'll get a day game here and there and that can work for the team's advantage. Some fans will like to take the day off and catch a game with the weather being nice.

For OP, another benefit is that these guys basically have maybe 1-2 days off (or less) per month all season, so if the last game of a series ends on a weekday, these guys can get traveling to the next city a lot earlier if it's an afternoon game. Say you're playing in Cincinnati on Wednesday, and you've gotta play in San Fran on Thursday night. That's what, a 6 hour flight? So if you start the game at regular (~7pm) time these guys aren't getting into San Francisco till like 7 am, and then have to play that night. Instead, you play the game at noon, and the visiting club can get to their next destination at a respectable time.

It's all of the above + tradition.

The money is there in TV deals, ad space, endorsements, etc.
