Default Mike Bibby target again with Gooden and Jones as Trade bait

Point guard crusade resumes

Mike Bibby target again with Gooden and Jones as potential trade bait

The Cavaliers' pursuit of a point guard has heated up again.

According to multiple league executives, the Cavs and Sacramento Kings have restarted talks to bring Mike Bibby to Cleveland. The two teams nearly completed a deal shortly before February's trading deadline and have been in discussions again over the past several days.

A version of the deal was close to happening Thursday, sources said, in a three-way move with the San Antonio Spurs.

The Cavs were believed to be after the rights to Argentine center Luis Scola as well, which the Spurs own. When the talks broke down, the Spurs dealt Scola and reserve forward Jackie Butler to the Houston Rockets.

In exchange, the Spurs received point guard Vassilis Spanoulis and a future second-round pick.

There are expectations the Kings and Cavs will continue to have discussions directly and with other teams.

The Kings, looking to add more scoring to their front line, have been interested in Drew Gooden. According to a source, Damon Jones also might have been included in the potential deal.

Bibby, who has two years and $28 million left on his contract, averaged 17.1 points and 4.7 assists for the Kings last season. He has an opt-out clause after this season, in which he will make $13.5 million.

Without salary-cap room and with the market being a little bare for point guards, the Cavs have actively been pursuing trades to pick up a playmaker to help their offensive issues.

In other Cavs news, there has been no movement in talks with free-agent forward Anderson Varejao.

Varejao's representatives, who left the Las Vegas Summer League without a deal Thursday, and the Cavs are believed to be millions apart. The Cavs have said re-signing Varejao is an offseason priority.

The Cavs summer league team lost to the Memphis Grizzlies 100-76 Thursday to fall to 2-2.

Dwayne Jones led the team with 15 points, Shannon Brown added 13.

Do it Mr. Danny Ferry and the Sacramento Kings are giving us an early Christmas Present.

The reason i want a legit PG in our team is to make sure that the pressure of being the no.1 playmaker would be taken away from Lebron James. Now he can concentrate more in scoring from the inside and i expect him to improve his jumpshoot next season.

Lebron James could possibly score more points than his current PPG Production. During crunch time Mike Bibby can help him to provide veteran Killer extinct.

We just signed Darius Rice or maybe sign Chris Webber to an MLE as a replacement of Drew Gooden. I know losing Drew Gooden would be a huge deal for our team but right know we can actually use Dwayne Jones as a Gooden replacement and give him enough playing time.

Now that the teams 1st option is to sign Anderson Varejao after the Grizzlies sign Darko Millic.

I think signing Mike Bibby would be worth it because the lack of a true PG kill the Cavs in the NBA Finals.

Did we sign Darius Rice, or did you word that wrong, meaning 2 say if we signed Darius Rice??

I think Bibby would be nice, as long as we keep AV.

But I'm actually thinking Jarret Jack could be easily attainable now that Portland signed Steve Blake.

And Portland needs 2 clear up roster space, maybe Jarret jack for David Wesley, then they could cut Wesley out, and make space.

I'd be satisfied with Jack as a PG alternative.

But I would be very happy with Bibby as our PG. We would still need 2 get a big man this season or next.

And maybe Larry would play better with a true solid PG

Portland has a stack of quality PGs. Cleveland might can one of them if they can't get Bibby.

not feelin' Bibby. Him and Hughes aren't good enough shooters. You can't have a backcourt of guys who chuck up ill advised shots.

Bibby is good, but you have to remember he was injured last season, so this will be a new begining for him where ever he ends up this next season.

I'm convinced the Cavs aren't going to do crap this off season as usual. The Bibby trade resurrected? Please. And all I keep hearing about is Varejo, when Sasha should be the priority.

Has anyone heard a peep out of Ferry about possible uses for the MLE? Nope.

Am I the only one who cringes every time he signs a check?

Cleveland Cavaliers' trade talks with Sacramento Kings for Mike Bibby off

Reportedly included Bibby, Gooden, Jones Saturday, July 14, 2007

Branson Wright

Plain Dealer Reporter

It has been only three days since teams could sign free agents and/or make trades and while the Cavaliers have not made any moves - they have not sat idle, either.

The on-again, off-again, on-again trade discussions with the Sacramento Kings about point guard Mike Bibby are off again, according to several sources close to the situation. The deal, according to the sources, would have included Drew Gooden, Damon Jones and a third team. But somewhere between that third team, possibly the San Antonio Spurs, the deal fell through.

This is not the first time the Cavs and Kings have talked about a trade involving Bibby. The Cavs were close to getting Bibby just before the trading deadline in February.

Apparently the Kings want to trade Bibby - his name recently came up in a possible deal with the Miami Heat. He averaged 17.1 points per game and averaged a career-low 40.4 percent from the field this past season.

If a trade comes off, the Cavs would satisfy their deficiency at point guard but if Gooden - the Cavs' best rebounder - was to depart, it would create a hole at power forward.

Granted, Anderson Varejao, who has yet to sign, would move in as the starting power forward but he does not have Gooden's low-post scoring skills.

The free-agent market continues to dry up and several players the Cavs were interested in have signed elsewhere.

Forward Mo Peterson agreed to a four-year deal with the New Orleans Hornets on Friday, a person who knew of the deal told the Associated Press.

Peterson will make the mid-level exception of $5.3 million per year.

Derek Fisher, who also considered the Cavs, will sign with the Los Angeles Lakers, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Mo Williams, Chucky Atkins and Earl Boykins are the best free-agent point guards left. (Steve Blake signed with Portland on Friday.) It doesn't appear the Cavs have a chance at Williams because he has received strong interest from other teams. Atkins, according to a source close to the situation, will sign a three-year deal with the Denver Nuggets.

In other news, coach Mike Brown may fill his assistant coach vacancy next week. According to league sources, Brown has talked to several candidates, including former Ohio State coach Randy Ayers, Scott Brooks and Dwane Casey. The position opened when former assistant Kenny Natt joined the Kings last week as an assistant to new head coach Reggie Theus.
