Avoid treadmills as much as possible. After running cross country/track and field, I tried running on a treadmill and it was a joke. I can run almost 50% farther on a treadmill than I can outside due to lack of wind resistance and terrain change. Not to mention that it was in an air conditioned gym. Also, once I switched to running outside for basketball, I felt so much better and energized when it came to playing indoors.
So to answer your question, stay away from treadmills and go run outside.
Edit: I ran 4-6 miles every day for the past year, and contrary to popular myths, my vertical leap didn't suffer at all. As a matter of fact, due to the weight training I was doing apart from track, I actually increased my vertical.
