You know the proper etiquette. Beans, The Spill. There's a reason why you're deemed one of the most fascinatin posterz round here with your philosophy major, and egg/noodle diet and late night runz.
I was at work. I sell TVs, which is weird, because I'm a total luddite and don't even own a TV. Anyway this middle aged woman was escorting two special needs guys who I think were in their twenties but had kind of childish demeanors and couldn't walk or talk right. One of them bought a CD, I don't remember which. He was black and pudgy, Downs symdrome or something like that. Anyway he paid for the CD himself with a credit card. My signing machine was broken so I had him sign a paper receipt. He just wrote "Clifton" on the dotted line. It was like this: "CLifTOn" with all the letters the same size, printed.

And I spent the rest of the day sort of lost in thought. How many people do you know who write in cursive? I know two below the age of thirty. Yet everyone signs their name in cursive. Why? Everyone does Firstname (sometimes Middleinitial) Lastname, and it's never legible. Why can't we just print our names? Why do we even have to print our name? An X legally counts, right? So why can't we write someone else's name? Why can't I just print "Clifton" and make that my signature? (My name is not Clifton.) Is there any good reason why not?

Yeah, there is. It's too late to change my signature now. I've already signed a bunch of stuff using Firstname Lastname in illegible cursive. I don't know how to write any letter in cursive that is not in my name. I do what everyone else does, and it may be arbitrary, but that's all right. It wouldn't even feel right writing anything else on a dotted line. If I use another signature, it will contrast with my previous one and people will think I'm trying to steal a guy's identity or something. I'll probably keep the same unoriginal uninspired signature the rest of my life because I'm committed. But, that's all right.

I put the receipt he signed in my wallet and it's been there ever since, sort of as a talisman of the fact that I am obligated to this world and I can sit there and proclaim all its rules to be arbitrary and dream up all these crazy ways I could rise above them and revolutionize the old way of thinking into something better, but most of the time I have to ground myself and work with what I've got and just play my role. It's one of those things that looks really lame or weird to you but holds tremendous significance to me.

Someone bumped this thread and I was kind of in the mood to sit and stare at a computer screen all night tonight, so there you go.

That's quite fascinating. Skratch dat, add a "very f*cking" before the quite. I can sort of follow your memory and inquiries about the situation.. but dam had that happened to me it'd be a momentary observation, nothing more.

I guess itz another testament to the chaotic method to the madness of life huh. DO you recall having goosebumps down your spine as soon as you witnessed the writing firsthand?

Word? I have a tendency to get lost in things. I also have a tendency to ramble on about the things I've gotten lost in if I'm not careful. I'm glad and surprised someone other than myself found that interesting.

It was like that was the moment I figured out the world and my place in it. I just stared at the receipt for like ten seconds with a lightbulb on over my head. It was the weirdest thing. There were a lot of ongoing conflicts during this period in my life and somehow at some stage in its sprawling evolution that guy's signature solved them all.

Haha, I'm no psychologist, but yeah I expected this. I have had similar epiphaniez en el pasado (although weaker, and not as insightful) when I watch the mechanical movements of squirrels.. when I see certain advertisements, hear the empty laughter of a sitcom. Otherwise insignificant events that pragmatically have no impact on somebody. It sucks though, to realize there's someone out there like you.

What were the conflicts you were facing? No kiss-azz, but your whole persona intrigues me. I just recall myself being extremely weak.. done with dishing out mediocrity at work and at school, being rejected my people I worked my azz off to set up amiable facades for, pathetically quittin in the midst of a treadmill workout, being financially humbled seeing my Maxima contrast with a classmate's Audi. At first I didn't give a dam.. but just viewing something about the movement of the squirrels.. sh!t just clicked all of a sudden.

So Virginia Tech didn't offer the right people to optimize your interests? You had to leave and transfer schools and at the sametime lost your virginity huh? A whole jumble of thangz.

It was a spur of the moment thing. Strolling down the sidewalk seeing a squirrel move. Looking into those black, beady eyes, and the twitching ears. Slowly, and gracefully it moved. I thought about Newtonian Mechanics in planetary theory.. about the strenuous life we led, the whole predator-prey cycle, whether or not to step on others to reclaim what was rightfully yours. Nothing overtly pretentious or advanced, but my whole life I strived to be different.. kept to myself most of the time. And lo and behold, I said f*ck it.. if God wills it.. if I don't play my cards right I'll revert to the corporate jobs I never settled for. I said f*ck it I'm never going to be famous, why should I be so reserved and keep my sh!t to myself. Look at the squirrel and how it moves, how predictable that motherf*cker is.. either taking a step towards food or away from an imminent thread. And I says it's time to man up and expose the thoughts, insecurities, fears I have. What could possibly go wrong if I wear my heart out on my sleeve like its' the new fashion. Became more vocal, extroverted and more or less happiness was the the rising dependent variable to the new talkative, irrational mofo that I became.

Cool. I don't know how to type the cheers emoticon, but it is implied.

It is weird how epiphanies work. Normally people's eyes glaze over or go circumflex when I talk about stuff like that.
