I just added a link from the NBA's official laker page where it states the name originates from the state's motto, not some dumbass fansite's idea of a cargo ship. STFU

How are you questioning an encyclopedia (a secondary source) when you yourself used a fansite to prove lakers were named after a cargo ship LOL

If the Lakers were named after Lakes then where did the "R" come from? It's Lakers not Lakes. And you think the official laker page is more reliable than a fan site? Please. Everything on the "official" laker page is put on there by outsourced data-entry web guys in India.

Because the guy who writes for the fan site is actually a fan.

The guy who writes for the official lakers page and encyclopedia is probably a Kobe hater and wants to make it seem like the name makes no sense in LA.

You still have yet to explain why you believe that one sentence on a fan site, with absolutely no references or supporting information, is more reliable than a researched account and the league's official Laker site.

Because its more logical and need I remind you that you're also citing an encyclopedia (lol pre-internet wikipedia) and a website without references. Plus my grandpappy knew ben berger

lol from history of the la lakers wikipedia

Quote:
The franchise was re-christened the "Lakers" in reference to Minnesota's nickname, "The Land of 10,000 Lakes".[3] Berger and Chalfen brought in Max Winter, later to become a founder and owner of the Minnesota Vikings franchise of the National Football League, to become the Lakers' new general manager. Winter also took an ownership stake in the team, which he would maintain until he left the Lakers in 1955.

Jesus Christ people. The name of the Lakers for the longest time was believed to be about the great Lakes. Jeannie Buss has stated several times that the team is named after the Laker freighters that were known as Lakers, and the great lakes explanation is just a misconception that has been propagated for decades. It's one of those things where a misconception is repeated often enough people just believe it. It's the one that makes the most sense, but that doesn't make it the truth.
