Default Trade Idea

Jamaal Tinsley
2009 1st Round pick (lotto protected)

for

Jason Collins (expirer)

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/feature...6~11&te=&cash=

Why we do it:

Okay at first glance it looks stupid, I know, but basically, we're giving up the first rounder next season to get 6.2 mil more off the books next off season, giving us a total of 33 mil off the cap next off season. That gives us an opportunity at signing any player we want next year. That makes up for a middle of the pack pick that we trade, like we've had the last few years. We get rid of the bad contract in Tinsley right away, and we get the flexibility to do what we want next year.

Why they do it:

Tinsley can produce when healthy, and they could use as many picks as possible with the direction they're going. A first round pick ain't bad.

I don't see them having any interest in unloading expirers when they're set at the 1 with Foye and Telfair. They'd probably just rather keep the cap space for themselves, I can't see Tinsley helping them in any long term plan they have.

Jamaal Tinsley is only a "bad contract" because of injuries, and the fact that the Pacers dont need him. Otherwise regardless of the how the haters see him off court... on court he's a decent player. I dont know any other guards who dropped 15 a night with over 8 assists for only 6 million a season. Please... feel free to try and name even 1.

The fact is, when healthy... Tinsley is a good player. Every other team knows that. But at the same time, everyone knows the Pacers are "in a bind" and really need to move his contract because they are not going to play him. So if they are going to trade him... the Pacers are going to have to make a losing deal. Your not going to get an expiring contract for Tinsley, or trade him for someone who makes less or equal money.

The player or deal they make will either have to take on more money or get a much less skilled player. Jason Collins doesnt come close to that description.

No way Minnesota is that stupid. Simple.

The Pacers will have to lose on any deal for Tinsley. If they traded for Collins they are winning. Big time winning. Gives them the center they need, and an expiring contract.

A center we need?

Do you know what you're talking about? We don't need a center.

We have Jeff Foster, Rasho Nesterovic, Roy Hibbert(who needs to get as many minutes as possible), and Troy Murphy, who all play C. If we were really that hard-pressed for a center, we could re-sign David Harrison.

The last thing we need is another bench-center, especially Collins. All he'd be is a lockerroom presence, another guy in a suit. He's purely for salary cap relief.

I'm not quite sure how Minnesota completely loses this deal. They get a first-rounder they could use. And why don't they need a decent PG? The have telfair and Foye. Ok... Foye is a tweener, he'll never be the pure PG a team needs, and personally, I like him as a spark-plug 6th man. Telfair isn't proven, and granted he had a halfway decent season last year, and team could use a post-up PG like Tinsley who can get 15 and 8 a season.

It's a win-win for both.

Yeah, a center the Pacers need. You might think he's a washed up 5th rotation depth chart center... but if you thought about it for a minute... you'd realize why he even got that 6 mil contract to begin with. He's a solid defender and rebounder. He played plenty of playoff games as the Nets starter and held his own against Shaq and other Allstar centers and power forwards. He would be a decent 3rd string post defender off the bench, or 2nd string fill in if Foster or Hibbert go down.

Believe it or not, Collins would be getting the minutes that Nesterovic or Davidson would have usually gotten, just because of his size and competence as a defender.

So in conclusion, the Pacers would be getting a guy they can definitely use at times, for a guy they cannot use, and have no plans at all of using. The Pacers are winning big here... even if they dont use him, this gives them the opportunity to trade for a player that makes a few dollars less to begin with, then immediately waive him. Minnesota is in the rebuilding stage... they are going to hold onto that expiring contract unless a "sure thing" deal comes along. I doubt if Tinsley is that "sure thing" deal.

Are you Jason Collins' mom?

Jason Collins wouldn't take any minutes away from Rasho.
