Welcome Julian!..
And welcome Adam!
Julian Wright entered the Dryades Street YMCA, and on cue hundreds of kids began to shriek like kids can do.
The Rebirth Brass Band began to play "Sweet Georgia Brown," a well-known theme song of the Harlem Globetrotters. Photographers, hired professionals and amateurs with cell phones, began to click.
But for however orchestrated that enthusiasm was, after hearing the voices of the Hornets' brass, and Wright himself, it was obvious that their enthusiasm was genuine.
"It's all about having a good fit," said Wright on Friday, the day after the Hornets selected him 13th in the NBA draft. "I'm really excited about coming here."
Though the issues of minority ownership and practice-facility funding lingered, the focus was on Wright, a 6-foot-9, 211-pound forward from Kansas. The Hornets had him sixth on their draft board, but after the Philadelphia 76ers chose Thaddeus Young with the 12th pick, Wright astonishingly still was available.
On Friday, Wright arrived in the city he will call home, taking a limousine to lunch at Dickie Brennan's Steakhouse, then to the Hornets' offices to meet the team's employees, and finally to the Dryades Street YMCA, where kids cheered wildly for him.
Wright spoke about how anxious he is to play with Hornets point guard Chris Paul, a former Rookie of the Year who Wright hopes can be "a mentor."
