Default Daunte Culpepper to sign with 49ers

Quote:
A source tells CSN Bay Area that the 49ers plan to sign free agent Daunte Culpepper to a one-year contract.

The move obviously reeks of desperation, but at least the 49ers are acknowledging a problem. They're not going to go anywhere with Alex Smith at quarterback. Per CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco, however, the Niners would only view Culpepper as a third-stringer with experience who could play in a pinch if needed. The 34-year-old would not be added to compete for the starting job.
And if you don't know why this is thread worthy then go read the Randy Moss thread. Article said he's not competing for starting job but WE BELIEVE.

260!?

Umm... well maybe Masoli isn't such a bad option after all. Hopefully it won't come to that but again that O-Line has got to catch up otherwise it'll be a revolving door at the position.

i don't get why the 49'ers didn't go after a proven QB. they have some good pieces and decent defense, and the biggest thing they've been missing is a decent QB. they should've gone after Orton, he'd be a great fit there. but it sounds like its the last few years all over again. what horrible team management especially when that one position kills you every year.

No QBs want to play there...did you see their offensive line in preseason game one.....Peyton and Brady couldn't have gotten a pass off.

I think this. +1

A QB would go into that situation knowing two things:

1) They'd be a stop gap before Colin takes over.
2) They could possibly get injured playing in obscurity.

So unless the payday was big it'd be a tough sell for some of the better QB's to risk all of that.

What Qbs turned down the 49ers?

Oh I'm not sure anyone had. I don't think they really campaigned to get anyone. But if I were a QB I would have asked for a lot to go into that situation. TO the point where fan me would say QB me is a terrible value.

Now I wrinkled my brain a little bit.

EDIT: I do disagree that's the biggest problem though. The O-Line is the biggest problem, and then maybe QB is tied with the secondary although the secondary should improve this year.

If the 49ers really wanted they could have gone after Orton as I'm pretty sure his contract expires at the end of the year, and still get Andrew Luck, but they would actually be decent with Orton at QB.

If they had gotten Orton, they may well have played themselves out of the Luck sweepstakes. 6 or 7 wins. They are better off the way they are now.
