He's one of the few US filmmakers rated properly (or even underrated). Top 100 filmmaker behind Cassavetes (whose Shadows was the pivotal influence on Lee's debut - and best film - She's Gotta Have It), Kubrick, Sturges, Lynch, Lumet, Altman, Mamet, Allen etc. Streets ahead of Tarantino, PTA, and most other US filmmakers today not named Scorsese.
