While the design looks absurd, I think that's the point. The best selling vehicles in the US for years are F150s and the four runner ups are always trucks. The truck market is worth $100 billion annually. So Tesla has to set itself apart and be jarring to stand out.
MKBHD talked about this and I like his point about Apple. Apple does the same thing in smaller terms. Like the Air Pods. The design of them looked weird first coming out. People made fun of them. Now they're everywhere and a recognizable brand just be looking at them making more money than any other headphone/earbud on the market.
