Re: Why do you folks think we're THAT far away, we need THAT much to compete etc...
Interestig note to me was Magic Johnson at the Nets game last night sitting by the Nets bench...during the first quarter? maybe second Kidd was Joking with Magic during a stop in play.... Magic doing a little scouting for the team, maybe showing a little support for a possible new Laker?
And on the artest front Nuggets are rumored to be interested in Artest for Kenyo Martin (see ISH Rumors page)

Jason Kidd could be on the move, too, if Nets ownership deems it's time to rebuild for Brooklyn 2009. Yesterday, Kidd declined to speak with reporters. Nets spokesman Gary Sussman said a sore Kidd was "in the tub." It could be Kidd's last Nets-sponsored bath.
Lakers minority owner Magic Johnson sat in the first row at the Meadowlands on Monday night and it's unclear if he was scouting Kidd for Jerry Buss. During the All-Star Break, when talks with the Lakers heated up, Kidd sounded upbeat about playing for the Lakers, raising speculation he initiated the talks.

I think the lakers should not just focus on getting an allstar. IMO Kobe + Odom + Phil + supporting case of players w/ high basketball IQ can produce a winning team
In previous laker teams, we had Brian Shaw, Fisher, Fox, Horry guys who are no where near star players but has high basketball IQ. They are old and not athletic and yet they play smart defense. Knowing how to position etc On offense they make smart decisions on when to pass when to cut when to shoot
In this current laker line-up from there supporting cast, only turiaf and Luke that looks like have a high basketball IQ. Evans maybe. Bynum and farmar, depends on how they develop.
The rest of the team has low basketball IQ. Smush, kwame, sasha, Cook. They have enough talent to stay in the league but they don't the smarts to play on a higher level.
Kobe
Odom or some other player if traded
Luke
Bynum or some other player if traded
Farmar
evans
Radman - lets give a chance, give him another yr to prove himself
Maybe sign Mihm for 1yr minimum
then the rest of the team should be veteran smart players

trig,
You are forgetting that our supporting cast of the past were very good role players though and call me drunk, but those are almost as hard to get as any all-star. Why do I say this? Our roster is not up to par with most teams.
We have few guys with trade value and only a few options we can do with those pieces as well.

To continue what Lakerfreak was saying i would imagine the lakers go after a named player to begin with but the real hard work will be filling the role player spots with the proper players... the players in place now may not be bad players, just not the right players for this team, and finding those right players can be a difficult proposition sometimes...
