Default center help

Seeking help at center, the Heat scheduled a Wednesday visit with Jamaal Magloire, 30, his agent said. Magloire, who is 6-11, has averaged 8.6 points and 7.2 rebounds in his career but played in just 31 games last season, joining Dallas after New Jersey cut him in February.

As far as free agency goes I think he is the best player available for us to pick-up.

I say if he is healthy, & in shape he could start. But if Blount start we should start Haslem next to him. If Magloire starts then we could start Beasley. We need to have offense, & defense at the power position.
Magloires defense, with Beasleys offense. Or blounts (so called) offense, with Haslems defense.

The problem is Magloire is questionable and coming off injury seasons.

He had that one break out season with New Orleans, then I've been waiting for him to come back like that again. Still hasn't happened... Wonder if a starting spot on the Heat would make a change?

EDIT: Another thing... If its true that they signed Dorrell Wright, that means the heat officially have 15 roster spots full. Assume Quinn and Magloire come onboard... who are they going to waive? I assume Lasme already, but who else?

Too many hasty decisions of signing D-List players are going to hurt the Heat's salary cap.

With 13 players under guaranteed contract once Dorell Wright signs, this certainly has the look of a team prepared to make a deal. Considering that Alonzo Mourning eventually plans to re-sign and that Chris Quinn can take a guaranteed qualifying offer any time before the start of camp, that would leave the Heat with 15 guarantees, which also happens to be the league limit.
It's a shame that Kasib Powell again figures to find himself as an odd man out, with his scoring potential so intriguing. This is not Earl Barron; this is a player with discernable NBA skills.

I say Powell gets cut or they buy him out when Zo comes back.

The Heat currently have 14 players under guaranteed contract, not 12. Here's the player list with their salaries and years left on contract.

Joel Anthony $711,517 -- 1
Marcus Banks $4,260,000 -- 3
Michael Beasley $4,314,960 -- 2
Mark Blount $8,513,916 -- 2
Mario Chalmers $700,000 -- 2
Daequan Cook $1,273,200 -- 1
Yakhouba Diawara $875,000 -- 2
Udonis Haslem $6,575,000 -- 2
James Jones $4,010,000 -- 5
Stephane Lasme $711,517 -- 1
Shawn Marion $17,810,000 -- 1
David Padgett $442,114 -- 2
Jason Richards $442,114 -- 2
Dwyane Wade $14,410,581 -- 2

This obviously excludes Wright, Quinn, and possibly Mourning who the Heat want to resign. If Magloire gets signed also, that puts 4 players to get waived or released. I'd guess Lasme, Anthony, Richards and Padgett.

Why the Heat rushed out to sign D-League players and their (lower level) draft picks so early before training camp is beyond me. I doubt Bobby Jones was really that sought after that they needed to waste $700K over the span of a month on him. David Padgett, and Jason Richards didn't need to get signed until training camp because we held the draft rights to them. Stupid Heat management.

But is this the right spot for Wright?

Catching up on a few mid-summer Heat waves:

While the re-signing of Dorell Wright certainly can be viewed as a somewhat cost-effective move, considering the two-year contract starts at the one-year qualifying offer he otherwise might have accepted, the question becomes where he fits in. For now, Shawn Marion starts at small forward and Dwyane Wade at shooting guard. They are, uh, both pretty good. At small forward, James Jones can come in for shooting, as can Daequan Cook at shooting guard. Then there's Yakhouba Diawara for defense at either of those positions. Even as he re-signs, Wright sets up as a player who could wind up relocated once he is free to be dealt on Dec. 15 or thereafter.
Of all the centers the Heat has been taking a look at, including Theo Ratliff, who instead opted to sign with the 76ers, I'd take a flier on D.J. Mbenga ahead of Jamaal Magloire or Lorenzen Wright. Why? Because on those nights when rookie coach Erik Spoelstra has to leave one of his centers inactive, Mbenga would figure to deal with the situation better than a player who has spent considerable time over his career as a starter.
(WITH 13 PLAYERS UNDER GUARANTEED CONTRACTS) once Dorell Wright signs, this certainly has the look of a team prepared to make a deal.
With so many guarantees in place, it is remarkable that the Heat nonetheless lacks definitive starters at center and point guard. A full roster and only a 60-percent solution when it comes to the first five? Only in the NBA.
Listening to Dwyane Wade speak earlier today from Beijing about the Heat, one gets the sense that some in the organization have told him that Mario Chalmers just might emerge as an opening-night starter. Wade's words: "I really believe in our point guard, Mario Chalmers. I think he can be great for us and surprise a lot of people."
Center, though, is another issue to Wade. "We haven't found a five-man," he said.

Exactly why?

Magloire has proven he is a solid center, Mbenga has not. I would rather go with the center with more experience.
