I am not saying this team could be better than Argentina or Spain. But Yugoslavia would always be better than for example Croatia. Soviet Union would also be better than Russia or Lithuania.
International competition would be much more difficult

If they wouldn't be better than Spain or Argentina, how would international competition be much more difficult?
Yugoslavia and Soviet Union could win Argentina, Spain, Creece and maybe USA. The group stages would become more difficult with more quality teams and it would take more energy from Team USA on the road to the final games. I just think international competion would be more fun with Yugoslavia.

Not sure about Soviet Union's roster, but Yugoslavia's wouldn't beat Spain or Argentina.
International competition would be much more difficult for Team USA if the former Yugoslavia would still exist. This could be the squad:
Radoslav Nesterovic
Nenad Krstic
Darko Milicic
Vladimir Radmanovic
Bostjan Nachbar
Peja Stojakovic
Aleksandar Pavlovic
Gordan Giricek
Zoran Planinic
Sasha Vujacic
Beno Udrih
Marko Jaric
That team could beat argentina or maybe spain. giricek is a very good defender. beno is a very underrated PG. peja is one of the best primeter scorers.darko and rasho provide solid defense. kiristic is a very good scorer when fit and jaric isnt as bad as people are making him out to be. peja, radmanovich and vujacic would be money from the primeter.

Jonas Maciulis - Lithuania - Zalgiris
Ramunas Siskauskas - Lithuania CSKA Moscow
Travis Hansen - Russia - Dinamo Moscow
Rimantas Kaukenas - Lithuania - Montepaschi Siena
Sarunas Jasikevicius - Lithuania - Panathinaikos

Today's Yugoslavia with the current mental state of these players would probably be a major underachiver. Serbia in the last years continuously underachieves. So does Croatia, so does Slovenia. More often than not, the chemistry between the players of these current squads is explosive in a bad way. Rebuilding is needed.
Serbia by itself always had the talent to stay at or near the top of Europe. Instead, the get eliminated from the 1st rounds of tournaments and from the Olympics. Adding Croatians and Slovenians would only increase the turmoil between them. And it's sad, because all former Yugoslavs love basketball.

definitely.
by individual talent alone, serbia is still undoubtedly stronger than anyone not named argentina or spain, but most of the best guys don't even want to bother to play for the national team, and the last time they did, they self-destructed in the worst fashion in front of their own fans. can only imagine what would happen if you put them together with croats and slovenians.
I remember Croatia having a very strong team in the 80's and 90's and really pushing even the original Dream Team at times. Watching Kukoc as a teenager, and watching Petrovic take on the whole team on his own was wonderful to watch.
Croatia/Serbia has been where the biggest amount of talent from overseas has come to the NBA. Producing legends such as Drazen, Kukoc, Divac, Stojakovic, Raja. All very good players with and even stars.

Ummm, the original Dream Team didn't get pushed by anyone ever. I believe Croatia was the best team they had to face but they still blew them out just like every other team they faced.

yeah they pushed the dream team really hard, they only lost by 32 points.
