The essence of the original series was ruined. Part of what made the originals scary were that Michael never talked, nor did you really know why he was doing what he was doing. You never saw his face, either.
That adds an insurmountable amount of suspense and basically what made the original terrifying. Now, in the new one, you know exactly why he's killing everyone, you've seen his face several times, and he started to grunt, make sounds and started generally talking.
That's not scary. You took it from a suspenseful, ominous, scary movie to a piece of shit torture porn film. And how does Rob Zombie not know this?
Goddamn Right. Would someone remake Jaws, and show the Sharks baby being fished from the sea by Quint, then make it cry, then have it create an elaborate plot of killing the Kitner boy in hopes that an old Quint would come looking for it so it could kill him. All while having the Shark hums a revenge tune?
Well ... probably, but that doesn't mean they should.
Jaws and Halloween are in a lot of ways the same movie. And the Halloween reboot gutted it.
I just watched The Science of Sleep. Gondry is a visual genius. Eternal Sunshine is among my favorite movies ever, and sitting among friends the other day, I declared it the most romantic movie I've ever seen. And even stuff that he's done that I don't like, like Be Kind Rewind, is visually stunning.
Science definitely falls on the better side, but it's not as good as I'd hoped it would be. It's got the fancy of Sunshine, but it's not grounded at all. Where Sunshine was rooted in the love story, and the fantasies were a way of telling the story in a unique, almost backwards way. In this the love story is little more than a backdrop for this character's fantasies. I'd like to say maybe I need to see it again, but honestly, I don't want to. Especially toward the end when Stephane gets mean, it becomes too dark for me.
I wouldn't tell anyone not to watch it, because visually there's enough there that if that style interests you, then by all means. But I can't whole heartedly recommend it. I'd give it a low to mid 70s.
It feels like it's been a bad year for movies to me. I haven't been to a theatre in months. I know the summer isn't exactly my wheelhouse (and there has been some quality, especially on the kid's front), but I wasn't even drawn by any of the stuff in the late winter and spring that was pushed back from last year. The last thing I saw in the theatre I had to take a ride to go see Exit Through The Gift Shop.
I really honestly did not like Stiller's character. I felt the movie going one way, and then it takes a 180 to a different place for a while and then another right back where it belonged. There was about 20 minutes that were completely useless and benign. It made the viewing experience that much harder. There was no groove to the film. The pacing really stood out, and It's like every scene hits you like a brick wall instead of a smooth transition.
I also did not feel any connection to the characters. The love interest was ugly and they didn't have any on-screen presence. This was a dud. And why did he keep wearing vests during the f*cking middle of summer?

i really enjoyed pans labyrinth. it told 2 vastly contrasting stories which confused me a little to begin with, but they managed to link a fairly brutal depiction of the spanish civil war (or remnants thereof) with fairytales about princesses and demons remarkably well. quite beautiful film.
The love interest was ugly and they didn't have any on-screen presence.
I didn't think she was ugly at all. Actually I thought she was kinda cute. I don't ever get that complaint anyway; why is it considered a bad thing by so many people when the female love interest isn't a model type? Normal looking girls exist in the real world, after all. People make the same complaint about TDK and it just strikes me as shallow.
But yeah, Greenberg certainly isn't typical. There's no real story arc or resolution, it's more of a character study than anything. And I thought the characters were fairly interesting, if the movie did meander about a bit. And it was still fairly well-made from a technical standpoint. I'd probably give it something like 6.3/10.

very solid, does what it says on the tin- russell brand vehicle that delivers plenty of laughs, its from the apatow stable so it was always gonna be literaly impossible for it not to be atleast good. puffy was very good in his role and was in most of the funniest scenes- fury walls had me

well, a true original. one of the best and easily the most thought provoking film i have seen this year so far, this is seriously ambitious and daring film making. those ishers(you know who you are) who are appreciators of the art house and especially the more interesting and experimental side of things will definatly want to peep this. scenes of incest and self mutilation whilst explicit are not actually that unpleasent- largely owing to how cold the atmosphere and environment of the characters... the closest thing i can compare it to tonally and stylistically is michale hanekes work.

Even though I kind of knew where the movie was going I still liked it. It wasn't as good as some of Scorsese's other movies, but I really liked the atmosphere of the movie. B+
Lebrons More Than A Game documetary was a great movie and exceeded expectations because of the fact that it had so much drama for a documentary that wasnt even scripted. I was glued to the film the whole way through other than a few scenes about his teammates but still a good movie!
