I didn't think it was that convoluted either. You have a lot of exposition but at least for me it was interesting learning the rules of their dream reality and they explained it clearly enough that even if you didn't understand all of it you understood enough to be entertained and understand the motives for each action.

It's not so much the quick cut from sequence to sequence. It's just a method to make things feel chaotic, and like they're happening fast, that's not uncommon to action films over the the last 20 years. Like during the car chase in level one. There's a lot of jumping from one character's reaction to another. I prefer a wider treatment of those types of sequences that give you more orientation. But like I said, it's become pretty common. I mention it mainly because it is at it's heart an action flick, and this technique is one of the reasons I'm not as big a fan of the modern action flick.

The cutting from level to level I felt was handled really well. Especially all the slow motion in level one, which really drilled home how much longer time is in each level of the dream. It served as a stop watch all most, that really built tension.

And I do agree very much that exposition was well conducted. Not that I could deliver an essay on every aspect of what they were explaining, but I never felt lost, and could appreciate the explanations they gave from level to level at least well enough to not become tired of it. It's just that it was a lot. As I said, and I was talking about it with a friend on the next day, it seemed like doing a simpler dream sequence earlier on would've served as a better mechanic to set up the process. Could've been in an earlier movie even perhaps, which would've opened this up to a faster pace. Or even if it was done in act I, where they do a more basic invasion. But even
Watanabi's dream was two layers deep. I feel like a more detailed version of that job would have been a cleaner way to set up the premise, then doing it in act two during what felt like a tacked on training sequence.

And again, by no means was it bad. And I loved the ending.

Excellent movie. I really enjoyed the pacing. It was acted well. I picked up on the ending early on, but it was still laid out well.

I've always wanted to read the books, and my buddy's girlfriend is reading them now and really likes them. My mother on the other hand didn't really like them.

That movie is still playing in theatres around here as part of a special series piece with the others.

I'd really like to check it out.

It was good... I think my expectations may have been a bit too high, though. I had heard it was fantastic from very reliable friends before viewing. I honestly expected a little more... Especially after reading reviews that said there were multiple unsettling scenes.

There was only really one scene that I would consider especially graphic and even that was nothing too extreme.

The story was good, but there was some implausible stuff that happened toward the end that left me scratching my head. The cinematography was solid and it was very well acted, though.

It was a solid movie, but not an all-time great, imo.

I had similar sentiments.

I've had that on my external for a few weeks now. I am very weary of foreign films now because I feel like the subtitles I get with them are really, really bad. I know some words are missing and the languages are being translated literally and not conversationally.

After Life

What an unusual movie. It's about a mortician who can apparently communicate with the dead before they pass on to their final resting place. And of course, the deceased that he communicates with just do NOT believe that they're dead so over the course of the movie he's constantly having to convince them. But the movie really toys with you as to whether he does have supernatural powers, or if they really are still alive. Plenty of ambiguity here.

Christina Ricci looks great as a nude corpse I gotta say. I think this movie turned me into a necrophiliac. Liam Neeson is good as the creepy, yet seemingly wise mortician, and this is probably Justin Long's best performance ever. Seriously I had no idea he had these kinds of acting chops outside of getting hit in the head with a wrench. The movie was well done on the technical front, but there are some plot holes here and there. Still, it was not bad, if a bit slow.

7/10

I work a lot now, barely any time to watch TV let alone a movie. I'll get around to it eventually, though.

Exam

This was actually really intriguing. Eight people, all taking an exam, where the top guy(or gal) gets a highly-coveted job. They don't say what job this is, just that they all want it pretty badly. Anyway, there are a few strange stipulations that they have to adhere to if they don't want to be disqualified(such as not "spoiling" their exam papers). They spend pretty much the entire movie trying to figure just what the hell the question they're trying to answer even is.

But the last 30 minutes were just silly; I couldn't believe how ridiculous these people were acting over a job. Acting was not fine, except for one woman. If you're in the mood for a mystery, which is also fairly suspenseful, that will actually keep you guessing, this is not bad.

Inception - 8/10

Pretty good. Not as good as I expected. I thought there would be more dramatic 'floating' fight scenes from watching the trailer but it was good. I did like how Christopher Nolan explained visually the different layers of dreaming with time dramatically speeding up as you move to a further layer. Pretty clever directing. I still like Dark Knight better though but I'll probably rent this when it comes out on Blu-ray so I can see it a few more times to give an honest review. It's one of those movies.
