Toy Story 3. It wasn't a sad movie but my mom cried for some reason at the end. I'm 21 years old and I really enjoyed it start to finish, not just for kids.

8/10

(Chungking express if u cant see the image)

Another fantastic movie by Wong Kar Wai. What really made this movie stand out in comparison to his other works is how much humor and optimism exists within the film. Maybe I’m reading too much into it but I did notice that much more of this movie takes place in the daytime in comparison to his other works, highlighted by the fact that the 2nd story is the most optimistic of any of his stories that I’ve watched and over half of it takes place around noon. To me, the infusion of some lighthearted moments (mostly by Kaneshiro or Faye Wong’s characters, but Tony Leung talking to his soap really cracked me up) really added to my enjoyment of this film as it did with Fallen Angels. Looking back, I can’t help but feel a little disappointed that the 60s Trilogy is so incredibly moody and serious. The three Chungking stories address their fair share of the negative aspects of love, and I feel that the healthy balance of emotions and feelings in these two movies create a more realistic and well-rounded view of love and life.

On the acting side, I enjoyed both Kaneshiro and Faye Wong’s slightly goofy or quirky characters. I would like to see Kaneshiro team up with WKW again in the future, he really fits the character of a guy who doesn’t take himself too seriously pretty well, and even his narration stood out. Faye Wong was great, and she deserves all the praise that was given to her for this role. When I heard that this was her first acting role, I instantly wondered if WKW was trying to find a Western Faye Wong in Norah Jones for Blueberry Nights. Unfortunately that didn’t turn out as well.

I do have a gripe about Bridgette Lin’s character. I felt that her character was not developed much at all, and part of that of course had to do with being unable to see her emote very well under the wig and sunglasses. A lot of time was spent on her story but in the end she just felt like a stepping stone for Kaneshiro’s character, leaving that part of the story feeling a little weak compared to Faye and Tony’s story, which was balanced by both of their strong characters.

Finally, I can definitely see how filming this movie could provide a refreshing break for WKW from the Ashes of Time epic. The movie flows very smoothly and never had me looking at the clock. I also got some strong Murakami vibes from the second story with Faye and the apartment.

10/10

I haven't been in here in some time, mostly because there hasn't been anything of interest out to me so far this year really. Although I could've written something on all the stuff I've rewatched, it's just not something I usually do.

Anyway, I just went and checked out Machete over the weekend. The people who seem bothered by it's rediculousness I just don't get. That's sort of the point. If anything, it's not quite rediculous enough at times. I found it enjoyable enough. I wish they didn't use so much of the quick cut stuff and let the action play out on a larger scale more often. The closing battle sequence was a mess. And it's a shame Trejo didn't get to do this 20 years ago, because he seems to have aged quite a bit. I'll give it a mid to high 70s. It did what it was supposed to, but it's not nearly as engaging as the original grindhouse features.

The remake wasn't horrible? I loved the original it just seemed remaking it immediately was sort of...unnecessary.

Quite good Caine flick from start to finish even though it lags a bit in some parts. A much more moderate story on revenge and retribution with an English twist. I kind of wanted Caine's character to go Liam Neeson on us as in "Taken", but that wouldn't have been too realistic or original. It's a solid flick nonetheless with Caine as a lead again. 6.5-7/10

Has anyone seen Catfish? It's a movie in select theaters, supposed to be a documentary about some guy meeting a girl online and going to see her. It's gotten good reviews from what I've read, but I wanna see what any fellow ISHers have to say.

I saw it and I wholeheartedly disagree...It was good for what it was but nothing that is really going to stick out in my mind.

CHildren of Men. Interesting concept and overall a really well-done near future movie. Basically, humans stopped having kids for an unknown reason. 18 years into it, and an illegal immigrant in the UK is pregnant. Really keep me interested the whole movies. YOu know how some movies just make you think about the concept in detail (not in the movie, but the concept is so interesting that your mind kinda runs with it?). THis movie did that to me.

Very good semi-thriller with hardly any discernible action sequences, yet the story and flow is strong enough to keep you engaged and curious throughout the entire film.
