Aronofsky seems like an unlikely director.. but I cant say I wouldn't be intrigued by the art-house possibilities...

I'm not a huge Superman fan, but were there any 'dark' periods in the comics that these two could use?

Three teenagers are confined to an isolated country estate that could very well be on another planet. The trio spend their days listening to endless homemade tapes that teach them a whole new vocabulary. Any word that comes from beyond their family abode is instantly assigned a new meaning. Hence 'the sea' refers to a large armchair and 'zombies' are little yellow flowers...

WHAT. THE. ****.

This was easily one of the most bizarre movies I've ever seen. And almost none of it was funny, so I don't know where the 'comedy' tag comes from. It's a very interesting, original film, however. And despite how ****ing weird it was, it did get me thinking. You can convince kids of anything if you raise them to believe so, and I couldn't help thinking this kind of thing is exactly how most people become religious in the first place.

The entire film seems made in a manner as to flank what you normally come to expect from a movie; even the cinematography is handled in such a way. There is almost no music, except for one scene when the brother is playing a guitar. So i'd say maybe 30 seconds of music total throughout(outside of the aforementioned scene). The acting was pretty transparent, and I'm fairly sure the sex scenes were real. If they weren't they were damn convincing. It starts off pretty slow, but picks up when one of the sisters is talked into giving head for a hair accessory.

I don't think a whole lot of people will like this one, but it's pretty intriguing, unique, and if you want something to take you out of your comfort zone, this will do.

I saw that one after hearing about it on a TV show about the last Cannes festival and I liked it. I agree with everything you said. It is very disturbing, but also thought-provoking.

Pretty mediocre movie, and the acting was especially poor.

aronofsky would never do superman and no studio would let him, he gets rumored for loads of these crappy franchises and he never does them- for good reason, hes way too good for this garbage. when the studio saw what he intended to do with batman they flipped. darren is simply too challenging and ambitious a director to ever make these kind of films- anyone familiar with his career knows that he will never compromise, EVER! its what will keep him out of the absolute mainstream and it will also ensure he always makes smaller and far better films. nolan on the other hand- if not lost completely to us, is certainly on his way down the slippery path.

Ambitious? Considering The Wrestler is a 2nd rate Raging Bull I don't know if I would go all that far.

the town-
was ****ing awesome, a significantly better film than gone baby gone, the heat comparisons are valid but the film it most resembles in many, many ways imo is point break. some of the sub plots were a bit contrived but that doesnt matter when you have such tense action and beautifully constructed drama.

You're probably right. It's nowhere near the artistic achievement.

It's most similar to this movie:

It's a somewhat similar story and I would think Darren had to have had this film in mind when making The Wrestler. As a character study, I think The Wrestler plays down to mainstream movie goers much more than movies like There Will Be Blood, Taxi Driver and other such films.

I'm seriously doubting The Town is all that. It looks like a knock off of Infernal Affairs/The Departed. The cast isn't all that either.
