its really not. the human sacrafice shit is all central mexico (mayan priestkings cut their ***** with obsidian to bless the growing season) and the slaving was all not based on anything factual. most of the labor was probably corvee labor by extended kinship networks. A fun movie, but only historically accurate in the most superficial of ways.

also, just saw the town tonight. It was solid and really engaging in some ways, but it was also kinda cheesy and dragged with the relationship storyline. definitely a fun movie, but I was expecting more I guess. 7/10

The Other Guys

6/10

I do not find Mark Wahlberg funny in that film whatsoever.

Will Ferrell had his one-liners, standard, but I wasn't impressed.

Is there a thread for "movies to see before you die", it would basically be the movie recommendation side of this thread. There are many threads of people looking for suggestions, but we should make one big thread for that. I think "Movies to See Before You Die" is a good name.

Wahlberg was kind of weak in this one. But it was still a lot more enjoyable than I was expecting. Id give it a 7.5/10.

I watched Machete tonight, and this one was a lot more enjoyable than I was expecting too. Action/comedy with cheesy lines and acting, yet it somehow all worked. Id give it a 7.5/10 as well, but due to the eva mendez looking random naked chick at the beginning, ill bump it up to a 7.75/10.

^ Some of those are jaw dropping that you haven't seen them, while others are understandable.

just posting my short assessment of black swan from the other thread here.

i just saw it and despite my concerns since alot of people seemed to love it(usually the mark of a truely ambitious/original film is that it divides people)did not let me down- suitably ambitious and no pandering once again(the anti inception if you will) shows(what i have been saying for years) that darren aronofsky is the best current american film maker and its not even close imo. who else is capable of this kind of film?
i couldnt believe how raw it was from the first shot, the body horror and just how ****ing confidently executed it was. it wasnt concerned with exact framing or even the right exposure at times and that just added to its brilliance.

10/10 another masterpiece from the future greatest director ever!

Brotherhood

So this fraternity makes their pledges earn their place by robbing convenience stores at gunpoint, only unbeknownst to the pledges when they're on their way into the store with pistol in tow, one of the full-fledged fraternity brothers will stop them, hand them a bag of money, and send them back to the van with instructions to act like they had actually just held the place up to keep the facade going for the rest of the pledges.

Doesn't seem like anything could go wrong with that, does there?

I was pretty intrigued by this premise even though I was fairly certain the movie would be shit, so I gave it a shot. And hey, it wasn't shit. It was actually not bad. Not great, but decent. There was quite a lot of illogic that can probably be explained away as being the result of stupid, panicked, drunken college kids, the acting was less than transparent at times, and there might be more shaky cam than most people care for, but overall it kept my attention. Probably due to the brisk pace, short runtime(~80 minutes), and occasional twist, some of which were more obvious than others.

6.5/10
