it is getting mixed reviews but i think thats a good thing, the negatives are from critics who either dont like the self indulgent style(erm have you ever seen a malick movie?) or are annoyed he didnt turn up at cannes(have you ever heard of terrence malick?)

think it had like 85% last time i checked

The Good Shepherd - 7.5/10

Good movie.. but it would've been better off had the story not flipped back and forth in time.

rock on.

My scale is this: Bad=1, Okay=2, Good=3, Great=4.

There really shouldn't be anything outside of that. I never understood the purpose of a 10 point scale when there shouldn't be any difference between a 6 and a 7 movie, they are both average, or a 9 and a 10 movie, they are both pretty good or great, and what's the point of anything below 5 if it all pretty much means the movie is bad. Either a movie is bad, okay (decent-average), good, or great.

Percentages are just reaching too far to pin down a movie.

percentages was used universally for a long while in this thread and then everyone decided to invent their own and hope everyone understood without explanation

They don't really make sense though. If I rate a movie 12% is that really going to change that it's any less terrible than the movie I rated 10%? They are both terrible so whats the purpose of being so exact about the level of terrible it is. Bad is bad, good is good, and great is great. In fact, maybe I should just drop down to a three point scale...nah because some movies aren't bad but not exactly a must watch.

I think Siskel & Ebert/Roeper have it best. Thumbs up or down. Yes...I think i will go with that scale. Thumbs up or down. It's settled.

Most, if not all major newspapers, critics, online review sites use a scale of 0-100. Metacritic and RottenTomatoes being the two most popular. Ebert uses a scale of four, not thumbs up or thumbs down.

Popular doesn't mean it makes sense. And the thumbs up/down is referring to the show they have on TV. But anything is better than 0-100 scale. If you need to go beyond the number five to give a rating, then simply write a review with no numerical rating at all.

I was really hoping for an IMO at the end of that.

"IMO" is also very unnecessary to say when sharing one's perspective. It is a given that what a person says is their opinion, so I don't see the point in adding "in my opinion." It's like saying "I'm not racist, but..." or "Not to be rude, but..."

There is too much hot air in the average conversation (online and off) just because people don't know how or are afraid to make the point that they want to.

You're saying any individual, including major newspapers and critics, along with the two most popular movie review websites on the internet are WRONG in how they rate their movies.

If that doesn't deserve an IMO, then I don't know what does. Sorry, an IMO is not assumed at all in this situation.

When it comes to rating a movie, everything is an opinion. It shouldn't matter how highly acclaimed a critic or paper is, they believe their rating system works for whatever reason they do. I'm saying, I don't see the logic in needing a one-hundred point scale to say how good or bad a movie is when all you really need to say is whether it was bad, average, good, or great. You don't need one-hundred points to say that, just four, five if you're anal.

That's nice and all, but I think I'll stick to percentages.

Loneshot, you may have implied that it was in your own opinion, but your previous postings can easily be read as if you think your opinion is superior to the others' takes on ratings and that the other way is wrong.
