i will largely echo what thorp and ridonks have said, its a mixed bag. but its malick so its still awesome and shits on every other film right now(from a great height). the main problems here- as expected- are that it is too indulgent(even for the great man himself). and the religious element really clogging things up. this really should have been 40 minutes shorter, as people have said, the sean penn after life stuff is just pure guff.
that said, whilst this is naval gazing of the highest order it dropped my jaw a number of times, tell me this didnt contain some of the most beautiful imagery ever put onto film. not to mention one of the best scores for many years. the creation scene was incredible. how it all ties in with the melodrama is loose sure, but there was atleast a decent dollop of symbolism. as for this being stock footage- i dont necessarily agree with that. after days of heaven(his masterpiece imo) malick spent years photographing scenes for his film he wanted to make about the creation of the earth, lots of jelly fish and plankton etc as i was reading so i wouldnt be surprised if most of it was his footage.
as others have said pitt was terrific and the drama works well, i got tired of the repetition of the less functional shots- sunlight/trees etc at times. but **** me just as a purely visceral experience it was still epic stuff. i know we wanted a full blown masterpiece but we still got alot of malick
8.5/10

Just came back from watching "Horrible Bosses." 10/10

This movie has to be the funniest movie I've seen this year, and yeah, I've seen "Bad Teacher."
The title made me iffy, but I guess you don't judge a movie by its wack name. The cast of actors were great together. Jamie Foxx was downright hilarious.

I didnt like it and will probably never watch it again. All because of that idiot. The dental assistant. His voice makes me want to throw myself of a cliff into a bed of a million nails.

I watched tree of life, at work haha.

i give it a 7/10

the photography and imagery were very beautiful and the movie is well crafted. but I think sometimes the actual material of the film didn't support the grandiose vision of Malick.

The juxtaposition of God/father and nature/mother is an interesting freudian motif. I feel Malick was also tackling a little darwin in there with the dinosaur scene.

The ending provides an emotional and mystical resolution of the past but the movie just felt too insular to me. It was ambitious, Malick's attempt to use a narrative of a troubled home as a vehicle to talk about a loss of spirituality amongst men imo. but I think it came off as very self indulgent at times.

I respect Malick but I am not a huge fan of his films.

I had this visceral response to that scene as if it were telling us that God is a human creation. That before man, there was only nature and instinct, and not the human notion of right and wrong, of success and failure. And I had hoped the narrative would continue that way, but it didn't.

you a nietzsche fan?

I actually thought that scene was kind alluding to the fantastical nature of life and the inexplicable nuansces that can't be encompassed by something like Darwin's machinistic theory of evolution.
