Saw this last night. Completely agree with this score. Low 90s for me too.
This is a good example of a movie deciding what it wants to be and being it. I could complain about the lack of, or really non-existence, of any character depth. Or the incredibly minimal story arc. But rather than tack on bullshit versions of those things because some hollywood development team thinks they're gonna need it, this Japanese production is allowed to just be what it is. A very simply laid out excuse to go through floor after floor after floor of exquisitely choreographed, and in my view even more importantly, superbly filmed Kung Fu. There's plenty of wide angle work here that lets the audience actually see the incredible work being done. As opposed to the american tendency to chop action sequences up into an incomprehensible montage of sweaty intense faced close ups and gaffer work so it "feels" fast.
They just don't often make stuff like this anymore. It was refreshing in a nostalgic kind of a way.
Not sure if this is an underrated movie, or if its just not talked about.... but its a great heist/crime/thriller with a notable cast (Clive Owen, Denzel Washington, Jodie Foster) and a famed director (Spike Lee)
Haven't really watched as many movies recently but saw Gattaca for the first time and it's a pretty incredible movie IMO. I mean I guess some really stickler critics could drudge up all kinds of flaws contained in the logic of the story but it captivated me with the script, acting and cinematography. Hawke, Law & Thurman were all excellent and it poses some interesting moral questions/dilemmas. If you are interested in genetics or sci-fi drama, it's prolly a must see
Don't know how to rate it. One of the most explicit films i have ever seen. I understand the ones that call this film art and others that say its just porn. I agree with both. Its tough to see the meaning of it, but beneath the layers of nudity and sex scenes, there is a sad story of obsession and lust that went too far.
The Cabin in the Woods. Wow. This movie was awesome. It is just exactly what it needed to be. Funny, interesting, and entertaining. I really like the where this movie went. It's original and has a cool story.
This movie will surprise a lot of people. It looks terrible. I was shocked that this movie was actually as good as it was.
8.5/10 for me (considered giving it a 9, but the middle was a little "meh.")
The movie was very entertaining, and more funny and original than I was expecting it to be (though I was expecting good things).
As an military nerd, and British Army reservist, I'm one of those guys who watches war films and says "that what never happen.." "why is he not reloading..." "my god this is stupid, that would never happen etc etc"
This film (though also, arguably, documentary/recruitment movie) gave me a f@cking hard on.
The selling point of the film is the fact that it is serving SEALs and SWCCs doing the action, so you know the drills are going to be sh!t hot and the acting rigid, and it is.
But my god is it seriously cool, they invariably use live ammunition during the filming, trust me you can tell. All the kit they use is insane. There are elements of US Navy piloting that my housemate(a current pilot, and a hopeful future military pilot) that he said was about as complex and difficult as it got, and these guys are doing sidewards....
If you like war films/online gaming/are in the military go watch it
