I have to disagree. Growing up in the south and going to public school in the days before the internet (80s for me instead of 70s, but not that much different) I'd have to say the film is a spot-on re-creation of the social order of things. Plus Matthew McConaughey's portrayal of Wooderson was hilarious. Maybe it's just a southern thing, but just about everyone I've met knows someone who was just like that guy in high school.

I totally get the nostalgia, and that's why most people like the movie... But it's just not a great movie outside of its' 'feel'.

Valid point. It is basically a snapshot. I think people like it partly because of the nostalgia but also because very few films have captured adolescent society without being satirical or preachy.

The Big Lebowski - 8.5/10. Very much enjoyed this film, best role I've ever seen John Goodman in. The acting was top notch, liked Philip Seymour Hoffman's little role. One of the better written films I've seen and the entertainment was great. Must rewatch again soon.

I think the fact that it was a snapshot of reality and the era was why it missed out on the entertainment factor for me.

The Missing - Tom Lee Jones - nothing special, nothing rubbish. I give a solid 75.5 10 ...

Is that fair?

You're very wrong about Dazed and Confused that perfectly captured a moment in time and high school group dynamics, but you're right about The Big Lebowski and it will only get better the second and third times you watch it.

One of my favorite Phillip Seymour Hoffman's roles. Julianne Moore is hiliarious as well.

See you at Lebowskifest

The Hunger Games - 6/10

- I haven't read any of the books so I don't know what is and isn't covered in the books. The movie was cleverly constructed but thin on story and characters. I liked the look of the world and found it interesting how they kept it at a PG-13 rating with quick cuts while still being overall very violent. Minimal use of a musical score was effective too. I was simply bored by all the characters other than Katniss and her boyfriend (??) who was back in the mining town. The background of these games and the world around these people was barely touched upon but I assume (hope) that will come in the sequels. The politics of these games are far more intriguing than the character drama. The inevitable comparison to Battle Royale has to be made and The Hunger Games didn't live up to BR for me. BR explored the grim reality of its young victims and how they confront and discuss death much better. This was like a watered down version of BR. Not bad but not too much good either.
