Life of Pi - 8.5/10

Really enjoyed it and it had some nice visuals. Should win an award for that at least.

(Though the Fly isn't reallllyyyy horror, more sci-fi, I still put it in that category.)

It is generally considered body horror, which Cronenberg is a master of.

Interesting, I've never heard the term 'body horror.' The make-up effects in The Fly are so wonderful. The CGI today doesn't hold a candle to the make-up and creativity they used to use.

Killer Joe.

Pretty f*cked up, especially the end there. Decently entertaining but nothing special. 6/10, when you're bored and need to kill time type movie.

Killing Them Softly - just not very good at all. Forces its political message and the scenes full of James Gandolfini's ramblings were overwrought, boring, and completely immaterial. No character development, no interesting characters. Just blah. It's not garbage, but it's a 5/10 at best.

This weekend I watched 2 movies

django unchained - was semi decent up until samuel jackson was in it, he was terrible, over acting and annoying. Usual tarantino rubbish though that relies on violence and shock to make kids like it. 4/10

hitchcock - pretty good movie. Already liked the old pyscho so that was a plus for me. They could have cast hitchcock better as he just acted like hopkins the whole movie. 7/10

If you're a Cronenberg fan, I definitely recommend his interviews and the book Cronenberg on Cronenberg. He's one of the most interesting directors to listen to talk about his own work, because he usually has so many ideas underneath what he shows on screen.

I got to see him talk about two years ago when A Dangerous Method came out.

That sounds cool. I will look into those things on youtube. I never get around to reading books for fun though.

The best picture noms, IMO:

1. The Life of Pi
2. Argo
3. Django Unchained
4. Beasts of the Southern Wild
5. Zero Dark Thirty
6. Amour
7. Lincoln
8. Silver Linings Playbook
9. Les Miserables

I'd go

Pi
Beasts
0 D 30

Django
Argo

Lincoln
Silver Linings

And I haven't seen Amour or Les Mis. I'd like to see Amour, just haven't gotten to it, while Les Mis I have no interest in.

It's fine as long as it gives great smaller movies like Beasts more attention when it might have been overlooked by inferior but mroe hyped stuff like Les Mis or SLP in a 5-movie race.

Well I think pictures like Les Mis wouldn't even make the list.

Also what did you think of the last song in Les Mis? That's the one that stuck in my head.

I was in a stroke-like stupor by the end of that movie. The only songs I really remember are Anne Hathaway begging the audience to cry for her, the decently catchy one about the red flag or something, and Russell Crowe not sucking for once during **SPOILERS** Javert's suicide. Oh and Sasha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter in their first song that seemed like it lasted for 20 goddamn minutes. Every scene with them was excruciating.

Javert's fall sounded like pumpkin getting squashed. So many godawful directional choices in the film.
