The Godfather I & II, Mean Streets, Serpico, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, The Deer Hunter, Glengarry Glen Ross, Dog Day Afternoon.. Etc...
Theres A LOT of good stuff out there..
Some other great actors that have good early stuff is Harvey Keitel, Martin Sheen, Dustin Hoffman, Paul Newman..
Its just all about looking them up and giving them a shot. I know most people dont really like to delve into films way out of their time period.
Saw all the Godfathers and Goodfellas, gonna definitely look into all the rest. I used to be like that (about time period), but i realized the silliness behind that as i was missing out on masterpieces. Thanks for recommendations.
I liked this movie quite a bit. This along with Moonrise Kingdom are my two favorite movies of the year and actually felt worth of the price of admission. the premise felt so hokey but the characters make it watchable and have a lot of heart and depth. still don't know what I think about the ending, but it's one of those feel good wish fulfillment that at least placate my emotional sensibilities if not my cerebral ones.
saw les mis
anne hathaway and the girl that plays epoinine carried the movie. hathaway should get some nominations for her performance.

I never liked Serpico. The best thing about it is that it lead to It's Always Sunny mocking it a bit. Deer Hunter is another I always found way overrated. I like the rest of those though.

The way you describe it is exactly how I felt about it. The acting coupled with the quirks was charming. The story itself lacked a certain something, it could have been solidified with a bit more depth and creativity. That's probably why the ending leaves us wanting more, because it seemed like it ended just as the intrigue started. Was still good enough for me though, I enjoyed it. It could have gone from good to great if the ending what a bit less open ended. Character wise thought I liked it alot, very charming and off beat in its comedic aspects.

Both of those films I liked specifically because of the acting.
Serpico I think is a good movie that is just not that accessible. Not much happens and there is just a lot of methodical nothingness that makes it frustrating to like. Technically I think its solid and Pacino's acting is the type that you miss as hes gotten older. There was a lot of quiet intensity in his performance. Its too bad that the ending of the movie does leave you with a vacant feeling of frustration.
The Deer Hunter I feel is great when it comes to its cinematography and acting. It has stellar performances by Walkens, DeNiro and Cazale. What I do dislike about it though is its self indulgence. There's a lot in it that isnt needed.. methodical shots and slow paced dialog. It certainly didnt need to last over 3 hours. I think more people would genuinely like it if it wasnt filled with excess, making it a shorter film.
^ I agree with your descriptions on the acting, cinematography, etc. They just didn't balance out with much of any form of entertainment for me. The few entertaining parts did not counter balance the parts that I felt dragged on. And I'm fine with movies that are considered "slow" as long as there are parts that are entertaining that stick with me. The Godfather movies are notorious for being "slow," but I liked them.
I partially blame Blockbuster for my dislike of Serpico though. When I rented it, I was in the mood for more of a fast paced movie, and Blockbuster had it listed in the "Action" section rather than "Drama." For a movie listed as "Action," I expected more than one (jogging) chase scene. I tried re-watching the movie years later knowing it is slower paced, but I still didn't enjoy it and I'm not sure if it is the movie itself or just my memory of my first experience watching it.
Predictable story but Amy Adams is all charm. Not convinced at all with Timberlake as an actor. Nothing special with this movie...liked John Goodman though. Just a popcorn flick.
Wow, I have never seen a movie with more satisfying violence than this. Thurman is amazing in the role and the fight scenes are gold. Looking forward to vol. 2.
It's a sports documentary about the rise of an all black cricket team from the Caribbean that dominated the whole world and permanently changed the way the world saw them as well as how the Caribbean blacks saw themselves and their own culture.
Just an awesome awesome documentary and renews my respect for that team. Even shows how money influenced all of it as well. It doesn't even matter if you don't even like sports, this is an important doc to watch IMO.
