American Hustle.

Saw it the on it's opening Saturday night. Place was pretty packed. I had extremely high expectations, and still came away impressed. To say that it's influenced by Scorcese is an understatement. The way they overplay the era stuff and use it for comic effect. The costuming (the hair alone will probably earn an Oscar for somebody). The musical overplay, where it's not just that there's a soundtrack for effect, but the soundtrack actually exists within the movie at times. And the tightly written caper. The long tracking shots. It perhaps skews a little more toward comedy than Goodfellas or Casino, but that also may just be a result of this caper being less grounded in the jarring violence those movies bring to the table that almost hits you like a cold shower (although there is a cool moment of that in this as well).

The whole thing was great. At first glance I'd say it's been my second favorite movie of the year behind only Gravity, and I have this sneaking suspicion that this movie will age incredibly well, the same way Goodfellas has. While Gravity I think will appear more flawed after the shock and awe of it's initial viewing on the large scale 3D screen (which I don't think is a bad thing per se. There are things about the movie going experience I think should be exploited more, like Gravity did with the scale and scope of what it did).

I look forward to joining my hebrew friends tomorrow for The Wolf of Wallstreet.

the green butchers -

8/10

Danish film about 2 guys who start their own butchers shop and end up serving human meat, I'd seen half of it before one night and thought it was pretty good so I watched the whole thing last night. Good movie I'd recommend it if you don't mind subtitles. Kind of an odd black comedy\drama.

My girlfriend wants to see this during the day on new years, sounds like it might be pretty good.

For people that saw Gravity, is it still a good movie without the 3D IMAX?

I was part of the first group of people to see this movie in theaters. Was lucky to get screening tickets that were followed by a Q & A with the director, Scott Cooper.

It was ambitious, but fell flat in a lot of ways. Cooper (admitted during the Q&A) that he tried to infuse it with themes of America during our struggles in the aftermath of the financial meltdown of '08, veterans returning from war, etc. It really never got that deep though. There were some pacing issues, especially in the first third where there was too much going on.

Some of the characters needed more development. The performances were very uneven. I thought Woody Harrelson was the highlight of the flick, he needed more screen time. Bale was ok. Saldana was solid but almost felt unnecessary. Affleck was decent. Whittaker was awful. Don't know what it was, may have been the writing, may have been him trying too hard, but it was the worst performance of his I've seen.

There were some decent fight scenes. The use of lighting (or lack thereof) was interesting and added to the atmosphere. Definitely entertaining and paid homage to films like the Deer Hunter, Fight Club, and Godfather II (last shot in particular). But it fell flat in a lot of areas.
Just saw this. I pretty much agree with everything you said. Harrelson was fabulous. Thought the movie had really weird pacing and I think the first half or so there was just way too much going on. Overall it was entertaining, but I was a bit disappointed.

The World's End - 8/10

I love these English comedies, especially with guys like in this movie. Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Martin Freeman... Great cast.

You're a shameless Scorsese stan but I do trust you that it is a good movie.

Loved the Wolf of Wall Street. Had some pacing issues, but I can only compare the ride to a serious coke binge, awesome the whole way through hope Leo gets his Oscar. And that wifey of his, godayyyum
