Great Gatsby

3/10

The music choice honestly ruined it for me. Not sure how you can make Gatsby without any period appropriate music. The way the movie was stylized was ok and Leo seemed decent but I didn't really give the movie a chance after I couldn't get past the soundtrack and some of the miscues in the way certain scenes were delivered. Daisy's appearance at the party and some of the Gatsby/Daisy scene were just done wrong imo.

I usually hate comparing movies to their source material, but there's no way a screen adaptation of The Great Gatsby could ever do the book justice.

It's too rich and it's too layered. And, to be quite honest, this adaptation was pretty shitty anyway.

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back 9.5/10

Definitely the best in the series IMO. Vader is a complete badass and the character development of Luke is great with his training on Yoda. Plus, Han and Lando are straight up lady killers

Baz luhrmann's style is go give a modern twist and stylized approach to old source material. Basically all of his movies have been like this. Knocking him for this isn't really fair IMO. It's like knocking Tarantino for being hyperviolent. You can disagree with it, but you should know pretty much what to expect going into it. If you don't like his style, why would you see this?

watched the Spectacular Now 8/10

would have gotten a 9 if the leading male actor didn't look so much like a douche, it's one thing to play a flawed character but I prefer my actors to not actually look like douchebags. the guy had his mouth open the entire movie

To make your mind up on it/him perhaps?

There are always exceptions to the rule, and I'm sure Jailblazers didn't give it a 3/10 just because of its style or approach

Correct. The modern music was really offputting for me but it wasn't the nail in the coffin. That was the first Baz movie I've watched but I knew his MO going in. Still, I can't say that his stylization did anything for me. I think the visuals were good but the music selection was just bad.

I think the movie got most of the interactions between Daisy and Gatsby wrong, which pretty much kills any chance of a good grade from me. For example, I thought Gatsby's behavior at the party that Daisy attended and his conversation with Nick afterward got Gatsby's tone and energy totally wrong.

But like you said earlier, the book is so rich and layered that it was probably stupid for me to go in with the hope that a lot of that would be captured.

Sin Nombre - 8/10

This is the first movie made by True Detective director Cary Joji Fukunaga, and it is a fascinating film. I really enjoyed it.
