UA athletics budget for 2007 up $3 million to $74 million

Associated Press

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - University of Alabama System trustees on Friday approved the 2007 athletics budget for the Tuscaloosa campus that's expected to be $74 million - up about $3 million over this year.

University of Alabama athletics revenues are expected to be $1.5 million more than expenses.

Fans are expected to spend almost $22.6 million to watch the Crimson Tide compete, making ticket sales the biggest money maker for UA athletics, The Tuscaloosa News reported Saturday.

Contributions come in second at $21.3 million.

Football and men's basketball will again be the only sports to make a profit. Football is predicted to bring in $27 million - $13.6 million more than is spent on the sport. Men's basketball costs about $4 million, but generates $4.5 million.

The $14.2 million banked by the two sports nearly pays for the $14.7 million lost by all other sports.

Though baseball generates revenue through ticket sales, it is expected to have a net drain of $1.3 million on the budget.

The other revenue producing sports - gymnastics, softball and women's basketball - also cost more to operate than they bring in. Gymnastics should lose $1.3 million, women's basketball $2 million and softball nearly $1 million.

Overall, UA's athletics department supports itself.

Trustees on Friday also approved the budget for the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where athletics needs $7 million of UAB academic money to meet expenses.

UAB men's basketball is the only sport with a positive cash flow, bringing in $538,000 after expenses, which offsets the $477,000 lost by football.
