Ron Artest shouldn't be there on an all-time ranking.

Why not?

btw, add Joe Dumars, Walt Frazier, John Stockton, and Moses Malone to the list for honorable mention if they aren't on your lists already.

My top 10:

PG: Walt/GP
SG: MJ/Dumars
SF: Cooper/Artest
PF: Rodman/Zo
C: Russel/Dream

most people would say russell

i never got to watch russ, but the best i've seen is definitely hakeem. he's the only player in the top ten in blocks (most ever) and steals. he played physical post d, rotated beautifully, stepped out and disrupted pick and rolls, and recovered from rotations and shot blocks to pull down a ton of rebounds. just about the perfect defender.

Ben Wallace gives me nightmares...

this is a tough list to make...

Jordan was amazing at defense but Wallace has won more DPOY awards

1. Ben Wallace

and that is all I know as of right now...

he played against people that couldn't even dunk...

russell is over-rated IMO and if you watch video's of him it is obvious that he didn't have the toughness of Wallace or Rodman on D.

John Stockton

I thought he was notorious for being a bad defender? Or am I thinking of someone else?

Yeah, you're thinking of Nash. Stockton used veteran tricks like low elbows and knees when he played off the ball, and he was a decent enough on-the-ball defender. He had quick hands that could strip guys on the way up, or pick off a bad pass. His overall court defense, not specifically on-the-ball D is why I mentioned him.

Bill Russell was great but at the time the only other player in the league that was his size was Wilt Chamberlain...everyone else he towered over, so of course he's gonna have rediculous stats in the blocks and rebounds categories...this is the same reason I don't really think Wilt's 100 game was all that great either...now if Russell would have had rediculous blocks and rebounds stats against Wilt or if Wilt would have dropped 100 on Russell then that would be amazing... what I'm saying is, if Shaq played a skinny 6 foot 8 NCAA center would everyone be amazed if he racked up 25 blocks, 30 rebounds, 75 points on him...probably not (besides the fact that Shaq gets tired easy...I think [or at least hope] you see my point)

Well first of all he's just 27 years old. Hard to put him next to long-time veterans like Payton and Mutumbo. Secondly, he has one defensive player of the year award, compared to many others by the other players listed in the original post. He's unarguably not the best defensive player in the league right now as well. Tim Duncan, Raja Bell, Bruce Bowen, Ben Wallace, are all considered better defensive players than him right now by most of the basketball community.

I just personally don't think he deserves to be with such company yet.

Probably Nash. Stockton was a great defender.

Most DPOY are given to big men, only a couple of guards/swingmen have DPOY awards. Jordan, Payton, Alvin Robertson and Artest. Sidney Moncrief is the only non-big to win the award at least twice.
