Why shouldn't YouTube produce shows?

I was just thinking, instead of waiting for television networks to start adapting to the internet, why doesn't YouTube just beat them to the punch and start its own production department? We already have to watch ads at the start of music videos and such, so why not just expand that model and do the same for actual shows?

They have done some, but since there are so many strangers doing those parts for them anyway they don't have to do much.
