Default Your Opinion of the Trade Deadline for Portland

So, 2 things to discuss here.

1. Diogu + $1M cash for Michael Ruffin + $3M trade exception

2. Lack of a big trade

For me:
1. I love this trade. Diogu served no purpose on this team and we were likely going to waive our rights to him to remove his $8M+ cap hold this summer. Michael Ruffin has been injured and may never play a game as a Blazer, so the player swap is a mute point. Our $1M to the Kings does not count against the cap as far as I understand. So, that ultimately makes it so we traded Diogu (didn't really play for us anyway) for a $3M trade exception. Considering that the last trade exception we had netted us James Jones and the rights to Rudy Fernandez, this trade could be viewed as a brilliant move. It looks small, but could help us drastically at some point in the next year (I say year because thats how long we have to use the exception before it expires).

2. I am admittedly disappointed. If I was told that we would do nothing major 2 weeks ago, it wouldn't have phased me. But in the last week we have been constantly been hearing Amare, Butler, G. Wallace, Jefferson, and Vince rumors. It sounded like we had a choice where we could have had 1 of those guys if we really wanted. That combined with the cost seemingly low got my hopes up. I love this team, but we have some pretty severe holes (especially perimeter defense and slashing to the basket) that I thought we had a good chance at filling. I don't see any major moves this summer that will top what we could have done before the deadline, but I still have some hope.

I loved the first trade. People don't think anything of Michael Ruffin because he has no offense and is only 6'8" but he is a monster rebounder and I think he could fill in greatly if Oden or Przybilla goes down and the Blazers would be just fine with rebounding and post defense. Ike Diogu is just a scorer and he is an inconsistant rebounder.

The thing I didn't like is that all the Nets wanted from Portland was Raef LaFrentz and Channing Frye. Are you kidding me KP? Neither of these guys get playing time and you have a chance to add Vince Carter? How often does this oppurtunity come around? Trade two scrubs for a bonefied veteran All-Star caliber shooting guard/small forward with a lot of play-off experiance?

I'll tell you how often...NEVER!

KP should've just been happy with giving up Frye and LaFrentz for him but he had to get greedy and try to pry Golden State's 1st round pick from New Jersey. It seems like every season the Blazers chase Vince Carter and they never land him and this was the Blazers best chance. I know he's not a great defender but I can easily overlook that when Brandon Roy just came out a few days before the deadline asking for another leader on the team because he feels so much weight on his shoulders. Not to mention he add veteran leadership on the court and a voice of experiance once they reach the playoffs.

I really wanted Portland to move Travis Outlaw for anything. I think if Martell Webster comes back and plays well on both ends of the court then Outlaw could find himself out of the rotation as it'll start tightening up once we get closer to the playoffs and even more so in the playoffs.

I saw a lot of good trades where teams were interested in packages of Outlaw, Frye and Sergio Rodriguez, all guys that need to be moved but nothing happened and it disappoints me because everyone in Portland know those are the three players that really need to be moved out of Portland ASAP.

I didn't hear that it was just for those 2. Where did you read that? I heard that the Nets wanted Rudy as part of the package.

It is absolutely amazing reading all of these forums (especially RealGM). People who have “contacts” and “sources”. Others being in the know about what trades were offered and not accepted. 99.9% of us sit at a PC and type out our thoughts and have no idea of what happens in the Blazer board room. The other 0.1% know someone who knows someone who knows someone who may or may not have some minor inside “contact” or “source” who in reality functions as a ticket collector at the games (hence no inside info).

Pritchard held true to his values of not making major changes mid-season. The only reason I thought he might make a change is because of the LaFrentz contract. He chose not to. His lack of action should not be at all surprising.

In the ESPN chat yesterday, Chad Ford was saying it was on Channing Frye and Raef LaFrentz for Vince Carter. I'm sure he would have mentioned Rudy Fernandez because he's a bigger piece than Frye is. I believe you, I'm just letting you know that it was probably restructred.

The only ESPN guys I trust are Chad Ford, Legs and J.A. Adande.

KP said he would have to drink a lot of beers to make a trade for Carter on 95.5 The Game

I somehow missed the part about the $3 million trade exception, but then a buddy in kyrgyzstan called and told me about the entire trade - that's a really good deal for us!!!

I'm not thrilled that we didn't make a trade, considering that we had the best tradeable financial assett in our hands (Raef's expiring contract), but I'm kind of glad that we kept this team more or less intact.

BTW, Ruffin got in during a free throw (Roy I think) at the very end of the game - I haven't seen him play in quite some time, but he LOOKED to be in pretty good shape.

If Chad Ford is correct (and I wouldn't bet on it) and we turned down a Frye and LaFrentz deal for Carter........well, I can only guess that management was having flashbacks to Carter admitting that he didn't always play hard in Toronto......that he didn't bring it every night.......

i'm glad how the blazers handled the deadline.

it's always fun to speculate about trades but not always a good move to actually make them

we have great chemistry and a couple guys who act like seasoned veterans

in kp we trust

and personally as much as i'd like to see a gerald wallace or caron butler on the team. i'd really like to see how this group does in the playoffs.

our youth is an advantage as far as fatigue.

go blazers. get homecourt in the first round!

Well, I kind of liked this move to be honest. Although I genuinely find it very hard to conceive that Nets would give up Carter for Frye and LaFrentz. They'd want something else. Having said that, if it was true, I think Pritchard sent a message: we don't have to make a move. If he thinks a trade will make them better, he'll pursue it but by no means are his arms tied behind his back.

Maybe Pritchard is thinking with the economy right now some big name players could be had at a discount. Why tie yourself to Carter's contract?
