Smile Albert Hayensworth Signs $100 Million Deal with the Redskins

Link

Quote:
The Washington Redskins have made the biggest splash on the first day of NFL free agency, signing former Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth to a seven-year, $100 million contract.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the deal includes $41 million guaranteed in the first three years, and the maximum value of the deal could be $115 million. According to Schefter, the deal is the richest contract ever given to a player and includes more guaranteed money than any contract in NFL history has ever included.

The quickness of the deal -- getting done just hours after the start of the free agency period -- could lead to questions of whether the Redskins tampered with Haynesworth. After all, $100 million contracts are complex documents. How did the Redskins and Haynesworth have time to hammer out all the details before 6 AM on the first day that they were allowed to talk to each other?

NFL tampering rules, however, are difficult to enforce because the charges are hard to prove. And the Redskins are obviously working hard this morning at spending Dan Snyder's money. They've already signed Haynesworth and DeAngelo Hall, and they're reportedly making overtures to Cowboys defensive end Chris Canty and Ravens guard/center Jason Brown. Snyder is apparently immune to the effects of the recession.

There was already a rumor thread, but this is the OFFICIAL one.

We'll see if he lives up to the contract. Now surprised the Titans let him go though. They're a cheap franchise that always fails to add quality players to the team. They haven't had a good WR in about 5 years and they still have a hack like Kerry Collins as QB.

terrible signing by the skins. sure he played fantastic last year, but he seems like one of those "contract year" players busting their butts. dude hasn't been worth 100 million over the course of his cdareer, and he has only played in 16 games once and that was his rookie year.

snyder just likes the big splash of signing guys to huge contracts... you can add him to guys like dana stubblefield, bruce smith, deion sanders, brandon llyod, adam archuleta, etc.

hopefully it works out. it could for a season or two, but i cant see this being good.

No big deal. Guy will go back to being a lazy player and not caring, and when he does care he'll get hurt when he is needed the most like the playoffs. I'm glad the Titans didn't sign him, he'll just go back to being lazy.

HORRIBLE deal. Haynesworth has only finished ONE 16 game season in his career and I think he's overrated. I guarantee his contract will only last 2 seasons before there is a problem.

100 million for a injury-prone DT? unbelievable

people need to realize that contracts like these are considered investments to dan snyder and the redskins. signing big names keeps them visible in the news and on tv. all the talk now is gonna be about the redskins. when the season starts, everyone is gonna tune in to see how haynesworth does with the redskins. casual fans are gonna see more of the redskins on ESPN than they will the Jaguars, and thats what will continue to build such a huge fan base for the Redskins.

you wonder why the Redskins and Cowboys are the two most profitable franchises even tho they havent done jack in the last 15 years and arent in the top tier market sizes? its because they spend on players who keep them in the news.

i definitley agree that danny boy views this as investment, but skins fans are sick of it. since dan snyder became owner, NONE of the players he signed via free agency that were pro bowlers before they were on the redskins remained pro bowlers on the skins. and the list isn't confined to a few players... deion sanders, bruce smith, mark carrier, andre reed, eric metcalf, jessie armstead, jeremiah trotter, mark brunell, shawn springs, keenan mccardell, shaun alexander and jason taylor are examples of free agents who were pro bowlers before they came on the redskins and then did not make once they got here. its cause danny only likes big names to make headlines and you can throw other guys in the mix like antwaan randle el, brandon llyod, andre carter, adam archuleta, etc, etc.

people want to see a winner and he is not doing it. too bad the stadium sells out every week so he has no incentive to stop. highest ticket prices and worst stadum experience in the nfl.

for dan snyder...

money >>>>>>>>>>>>>> winning

Would rather have an owner that is overly aggressive. At least that creates some sort of excitement. Beats the alternative, which is to have a cheapskate owner like a Mike Brown. Yeah, in a perfect world, you would have something in the middle, but that usually isn't the case. In this economy, you have to find a way to keep people coming to the stadium, because I'm willing to bet attendance-wise, we may see some things next year that we haven't seen in a long time. I don't think we can assume that people will continue to shell out the big dough for tickets. with the current circumstances

More people should jump on the Skins for the Deangelo Falls deal than this. Albert improves a need which was DL. I like this move. Sure there is that risk, buyer beware factor. But this is a player imo worth the risk. Especially compared to past money throwing.
