i hardly even know what counts as indie anymore, bit i'll try and mention some of my favorites:

arctic monkeys - fluorescent adolescent
pixies - debaser

feist - limit to your love
the doves - pounding
violent femmes - blister in the sun

I still don't quite understand what indie means, is it a genre? Is it a status? I click the links ikoiko posts and it's pop music.

the pixies sound like pop to you? It's whatever, as subjective as music is it's futile trying to discuss such matters. All the "facts" are based on opinion so what's the use. You keep believing what you think indie really is I'm content with it.

"Indie" is as bad a label as "Alternative Rock" is.

Why do you feel that's a bad label?

There's no such thing as indie music. Well, maybe there is but then it's not used correctly in general. The whole purpose of it was to distinguish music that was released on major labels from music that released by independent labels. Commercial music versus music that was created 'from an artistic perspective'. Nowadays pretty much every band that incorporates guitar and doesn't get airtime on mainstream commercial radios is called indie. However, there are heaps of so-called indie bands who are in fact money cows for their record companies. Heck, even Coldplay is being called indie, go figure.
