Several NBA sources said the Clippers are quietly considering relieving coach/general manager Mike Dunleavy of his GM duties and bringing in someone else. Rumored candidates include former Heat GM Randy Pfund, a former Lakers coach, and ex-Lakers and Grizzlies GM and Hall of Famer Jerry West. If a new GM is brought in, Dunleavy would be expected to remain as coach in large part because he is under contract until 2011. The Clippers have a long list of talent - Baron Davis, Eric Gordon, Al Thornton, Zach Randolph, Marcus Camby, Chris Kaman - but have been one of the NBA's most disappointing teams this season. As of Friday, the Clippers had lost 193 man-games to injuries and illness, while using 29 starting lineups this season. Dunleavy, who was hired in 2003, is the third-longest-tenured coach in the NBA behind Utah's Jerry Sloan and San Antonio's Gregg Popovich. Dunleavy and Davis, who signed a five-year, $65 million contract during the offseason, haven't always seen eye-to-eye this season.
If a new GM comes in, I'm pretty confident he'll axe Dunleavy.
wouldnt that decision ultimately rest with Sterling tho, who certainly won't favor paying out Dunleavy's salary at the same time he's paying a new coach. dont get me wrong, i'd love to see it happen. even tho i dont mind Dun as a GM, i'd definitely be fine with losing him there if it meant losing him as a coach too.
This team doesnt look like it learns anything on days when they dont have games. They look like a complete mess on offense. There's no rhyme or reason to anything. It's bedlam. As much as it's reported how controlling Dunleavy is over the offense, there's seems to be no apparent design to it. They need a new coach so badly.
great, so they're gonna relieve him from his GM duties which he is decent at, but leave him as the coach which he sucks at.
what a freakin mess.
Exactly... What the hell is our front office thinking? Dunleavy has actually acquired a good blend of talent he just needs to learn to run plays that utilize his players abilities. Axe him as coach not GM please
Here's the way I see it if we keep Dun at GM but fire him as coach. He'll put the new coach under a microscope and find any reason possible to fire him.
yeah but if a new coach has success or at least improves the team, there really would be no justification for Dunleavy to fire him, lest he risk his own job as GM.
either way, it is completely unjustifiable to start next season with the same players and same coach as this year. i know we've had injuries, but thats no excuse for our record to be this bad. people forget that we werent winning anything before the injuries.
this team NEEDS a new coach, and a few tweeks to the roster as well. something better happen by the start of next season. if not, stuff could hit the fan if the team sucks like this again.
