When you are judging actors this great(or when comparing any two actors imo), you have to see who was better outside their "niche", natural roles. DeNiro was actually pretty funny in Analyze This.

No doubt. Deniro's going to bring it every time out no matter how ****ty overall the movie is. But Deer Hunter is one of the most psychologically intense movies I've ever seen, Raging Bull speaks for itself, and he was toned down but razor sharp (as well as actually learning Italian, didn't know a word before filming) for GF2. I think his 70s performances just outshine anything he's done since, although Goodfellas and Casino were classic Deniro (thanks to Scorsese lol)

forgot about that movie...

even in that comedy he was a gangster...

and then there is Meet the Parents/Fockers

and now that I think about it, even in those two movies he still played a hard ass...

IDK, I don't really think Denerio can be viewed as a great comedic actor...JMO

I can make an argument, pretty easily actually, that Daniel Day-Lewis and Gary Oldman are much better actors than both Deniro and Pacino. For the most part, Deniro and Pacino play one dimensional characters (not that they themselves are flat or one dimensional actors), but they're always gangsters. Gary Oldman is a complete chameleon and if you didn't see his name in the credits most of the time you wouldn't even know it was him. Deniro and Pacino are both method actors but Daniel Day-Lewis is universally regarded as the method actor, that should tell you enough... and his 2 oscars just backs him up. Watch these movies and you'll see what I mean:

Gary Oldman
Sid and Nancy
State of Grace
Dracula
True Romance
Leon (The Professional)
Immortal Beloved

I don't need a lesson on Gary Oldman(My favorite actor) and Daniel Day Lewis(My third favorite actor behind Johnny Depp). I know their work, but the fact is Al Pacino's performance in Dog Day Afternoon is better(from an acting standpoint) than anything Oldman has ever done. Moreover, Daniel Day Lewis does matches up well with Deniro, but Deniro has more great roles under his belt(unlike Lewis who doesn't do movies on a consistent basis), and DDL actually called Deniro his "champion", so clearly DDL would even admit Deniro is superior to him.

We have something in common at least, Gary's my favorite actor too

And Depp is grossly underrated because he has the whole pretty boy image but the man can act, very versatile and talented. All that being said...

Oldman is more versatile than Pacino could ever hope to be. And it's not just the physicality, if you want to talk about a performance from an acting standpoint that can hold up to 'Dog Day Afternoon' (great movie btw), watch Sid and Nancy. He not only transforms physically into Sid Vicious, but he embodies the man in the film. Same goes with Immortal Beloved.

Deniro's performances are legendary but with the exception of Raging Bull and maybe Taxi Driver, I don't think he gets into character in the all-consuming way Lewis does. And yes Deniro has been in more movies but A) He's older and has been around longer 2) 9 times out of 10 he's a gangster, even when doing comedies. I'm not taking anything from Deniro, because honestly I couldn't even if I wanted to, I just think Day-Lewis is the master of the method. The man might realistically have 3-4 best Actor Oscars when it's all said and done, Deniro's glory days are way behind him unless he comes out of left field with a decent project.

If COURSE he is, but to say that his performance in Sid and Nancy is better than Pacino's in Dog Day Afternoon is popostrous.

I still wouldn't say it holds up to it, it was a really good performance from Oldman, but Pacino's performance in Dog Day Afternoon has got to be one of the top ten best performances ever.

Although one thing is for sure, Gary Oldman is more naturally talented than Pacino.

Daniel Day-Lewis? Just no. The guy averages a movie like once every four years. Not saying he's not incredible, but he doesn't have the resume. Oldman, also completely awesome, doesn't carry great movies as the lead like the Pacino and RDN, and even DDL, do. He's better as a supporting role.

On topic, I'll RDN over Pacino without hesitation.

He averages a movie 'every four years', but already has 2 best actor oscars (same as Deniro, more than Pacino). What does that tell you? Quality>Quantity my friend. And Oldman can and has carried movies but he's not as marketable as a Will Smith or a Brad Pitt so he remains mainly unknown and undervalued by the average movie-goer. But even the guy that was arguing with me will tell you he has more talent than 99.9% of the actors, or rather movie stars working today.

I'm not discrediting DDL or Oldman, but as far as career longevity and body of work go, De Niro and Pacino are still ahead of both. I don't go by Oscar nods to determine who is greater, although that is very impressive for DDL. Being that talented that you can wait until a script comes around that you know will you net you at least a nomination. Bill the Butcher and Daniel Plainview were incredibly similar though.

Call me lame, but my favorite Oldman role was Air Force One. I used to watch that on VHS all the time as a kid before I realized that he was a British dude, not Russian.

Haha, that is lame... just kidding, barely

But I'm sure Day-Lewis has 137 new scripts piled on his desk from directors and producers trying to get him to do the lead in their film. But obviously he knows how to use his discretion wisely. He's doing a movie with Scorsese with Benicio Del Toro and Gael Garcia Bernal costarring, so I think his pick and choose method when it comes to roles is working just fine. And I don't get how Plainview and Bill the Butcher were similar, they were both violent but that was about it. Nothing in their movements, voice, mannerisms, and overall persona was similar in my view. The Butcher was much more charismatic, was capable of dark comedy, meanwhile Plainview was just a hobbling misanthrope.

Just watch this video, if I didn't know any better I'd swear it was 2 different people:
