as far as pure singing ability goes, beyonce is up there with some of the legends. people might not personally like her music, but that's another issue. ashanti doesn't deserve to be mentioned tho. netiher does bill withers.
and oh, mariah carey can outsing any of the listed. she's got something crazy like a six-octave range.

I actullay disagree. There's nothing about her vocal ability that impresses me.

Beyonce is a mediocre singer and a horrible singer if we want to compare her to the all time greats.
Its a joke if we want to compare her to the greats.

you're the guy who puts bill withers way ahead of beyonce. i understand if you like his music better, but try and put aside your personal music preferences and look objectively at singing ability.

I think you are talking strictly about technical ability. IE, how many octaves can one hit, vibrato range, etc. But singing is making music, and that is more than just raw technical ability.
Is Battio a better guitarist than Hendrix because he can hit more notes per second? Hell no!
Beyonce might have more range than Withers, but Withers is so out of her league in musicality that taking the whole picture into account it's a landslide in his favor.

yeah, maybe we're talking about different things.
of course, music is an art form in which a lot of subjective parameters measure greatness. but technical ability is the one thing that can be measured objectively when we're talking singers.
if we're only going to talk about "musicality" and "soulfulness" and stuff like that, it's not interesting anymore as it's all about taste and i don't think the OP was asking who we liked better.

I'm not that big on Bill either, I'm very objective when it comes to singers/ing.
Bill has a smoother voice, with great control and tone. And while he may not be a powerful singer like Teddy Pendergrass, he still has more soul than Beyonce. His range at hitting some notes is also better than Beyonce. Thing is, he sings so effortlessly and most singers would cough up a lung trying to hit the notes he did.
Its kinda like Michael Jackson.
He sings so effortlessly and to many it doesn't sound as hard as the Tendergrass, the Arethas, the Al Greens..... until they try to sing their songs.
I've always laughed when people try to sing Stevie Wonder. And it sounds like a cat in a blender when they try to hit those notes.
Beyonce's annoying voice would crack trying to sing this:
