Default facebook is overrated; face-to-face connections matter more

anyone else feel this way:

"...Iím not sold on the idea that (Facebook and LinkedIn) always make it better. For one thing, social networking online is a ton of work. Between responding to notifications, wishing everyone a happy birthday and

clicking ignore on ridiculous Facebook application requests, it can feel like Iíve spent all day on social networking and no time of anything that will actually make it worthwhile to have a network."

http://www.lifehack.org/articles/com...o-offline.html

"...there are some better options. In particular, Iím talking about limiting your online networking and focusing on what you can do offline...

Thereís certainly a time and a place for both online and offline networking. There are plenty of people I never would have met without the ability to connect online ó

living on different continents no longer prevents making a good connection. But social networking will never replace what you can do in person."

You can organize a party with 300 invited guests in about two minutes while before facebook doing such a thing could take hours because of all the phone calls you'd have to make.

If you're the kind of tool who feels like they're obligated to facebook then you're probably also the kind of tool who spends all their time feeling obligated to other people and you probably spend 20 times the time you spend on facebook doing things with people in real life that you'd really rather not do.

Also it's a funny time we live in when clicking ignore on a dozen things, which takes 30-45 seconds, is a burden. I'd take that over real-life solicitations any day of the week. In the real world everyone wants to sell you insurance or get you to run 20 miles or dance for 72 hours to save some lives in Africa or something or wants to talk to you about whatever dumb political cause they advocate. On facebook you can dispose of all that stuff in 30 seconds.

Facebook is just like anything else on the internet. It has its positive and its negative aspects and it's up to the user to determine whether it's a good or a bad thing for him. If you let other people run your life then you let other people run your life, be it on facebook or otherwise.

I disagree.

This is just a stupid biased article trying to sell apoint. All it takes is a click and applications are blocked from your account. Also, you can't always meet up with people or find people. I wouldn't have met so many people had I not used facebook. Not to mention it's basically a free answering machine, just leave a message and people get back to you. It also has instant messaging on it so it's just an overall package.

depends on how you use facebook, A lot of my friends use it to meet/ flirt with women and genrally use it as a way of socialising. I personally think that is wrong and it gets people into a bad mental state. Using facebook as a means of keeping in contact though is fine.

I never understood sites like Facebook and MySpace. My Step-Sister and an "Internet Friend" of mine got me into Facebook and I was just puzzled. All you do all day is post on random boards saying stupid **** and posting little pointless comments on random pictures.

If I wanted to talk to a friend of mine, I would call them, or meet up with them. Not post a stupid random pointless comment on a picture of them. I guess I can see it being useful when you want to stay in touch with friends far away, but as far as friends that you go to School with, I just text them. I just text everybody. **** Facebook and MySpace.

I don't know, I just find those site kind of pointless. I would much rather "socialize" with women face to face in a L.A. Night Club. Or just text.

there are at least 6 people i had completely lost touch with that i've reconnected with again specifically b/c we found each other again on Facebook.

That and how easy it is to organize events with people are what make it really useful to me.

I like Facebook along the lines of setting up things with people that are hard to get in contact with. Old time friends, things like this. However I think it's stupid to have as many friends as you can find when you won't even be talking to them anyway.

Until facebook allows you to actually penetrate a woman, I won't use it.

Ok, I will once a week to see if anyone said anything on my wall, but that's it. I got a phone. That's all I need to talk to people while sitting on my ass.

I agree. What's the point in adding a person as a friend and speaking with them, when he has lots of friends? In some situations, the user might not even know you. Do you think the user would give everyone a comment? That's sad.

Yeah that's what I get sometimes; people just type in a quick random message like boo, 'hi', or 'hello' to get my attention (I usually respond back in an equally random manner). Other times I am the perpetrator. Yeah FB is pretty much only good for posting pics of presumably yourself for sharing with your 'friends' and staying in touch with them. Pretty much a better version of Myspace if you ask me (I am not sure if it's going to get replaced anytime in the near future though).

the social network main target audience is the socially inept people in real life who can't even carry a conversation...the socially awkward crowd...

and don't even get me started on the facebook and myspace angle pictures...really now...i see right through you chump.

Forget facebook, what about Ipods and mp3 players, because of them we miss so much daily interaction.

You're forgetting that sometimes people don't want to talk face-to-face. I know that more than half of my facebook friends I wouldn't even go out to visit. I keep contact with my closer friends but facebook is meant to connect with old friends that you've had in previous schools or friends from different areas if you've moved. I don't agree with the OP article.
