Reading this biography made me wonder what magnitude of celebrity Jack Johnson would have been if he were a heavyweight in today's day an era. His brash and confident personality was vilified because of his skin color but today his individualism would be celebrated. His ability to look at society and life beyond the black and white of that era was met with tons of opposition.

I'm glad I picked this book up randomly on a trip in to borders after reading the back cover because I now know about the life and times of an incredible figure in sports history.

The ending of the book and his fued with Joe Louis was sad to read but I couldn't imagine Jack Johnson going out humbly or quietly.

8/10

Jack Johnson is an extremely interesting figure. And a straight G. I'll have to find this book.

The narrative voice in the Hitchikers Guide series is prob the best I've ever read. Like no joke, even though it's comedy, for what it is, the narrative voice just fits absolutely perfect, better than anything else I've read.

I had no idea that loan sharks got the name shylocks from this book but it is not surprising to see another influence in soceity from Shakespeare.

It was a very easy read and the story was very riveting. I read the entire play in two sittings. Shylock is the best villain I've read from Shakespeare and it is not surprising that such a character would make an impact in the vocabulary of soceity.

Antonio playing the pure Christian to Shylock's greedy Jew was a little too stereotypical for my liking but its not surprising to see something like that written around the time of Elizabethan England.

^ Good stuff, one of my favorite speeches of all his plays comes from there (Shylock's "i am a jew" speech). Those strong stereotypes have always existed for Jews in literature, even if you fast forward to the 19th century (Fagin from Oliver Twist being Dickens' Shylock). I like watching the movie versions right after reading the play because most of them have quality adaptations. Merchant of Venice has a very nice one with Al Pacino playing Shylock.

Ill have to watch that movie. I watched the Much Ado About Nothing adaptation with Denzel, Emma Thompson, and Keanu after reading the play and enjoyed it a lot.

That's a good one too. Kenneth Branagh was born to act in Shakespeare movies. Was brilliant in Much Ado.
